Max oil consumption

Blower

Forum Mentor
How much is your max oil consumption?
I got -86 GS1150. It has new exhaust valves & guides new valve seals (in & ex). Cylinders are bored about 2500 miles ago. Engine runs strongly, no visible oil leaks, no fouled plugs, but oil consumption is nearly 1.5 gallons/1000 miles!
I think the cylinder boring is not done as it should or Ihave broked it in wrong.

Something is definately wrong. 1 quart per 1000 miles is acceptable for some people but your over 6 times that amount. Id be checking to be sure the rings are installed properly, end gaps are not lined up, valve seals are in place, things like that. Especially for only have 2500 miles on it.

And even that is probably twice an normal level. Of course if you are leaking oil all bets off.

That thing must some alot?

So, at a quart every 167 miles you are basically adding almost a quart every fillup?

The mosquito control department must feel threatened by your existence. :-k

At that rate of consumption, there MUST be a constant cloud of smoke following you. :o

Sure glad my Wing does not use oil like that. I change the oil at ... well, let's just say "extended intervals", and it's not even a quart low. :-\\\

.

My 1150 is still at the full mark after 4000 kilometers. I change the oil and filter every 5k and have never had to add any.

I don't know how you can use that much oil and not foul the plugs.

Are you sure you didn't mean 1.5 litres?
Which isn't great but rideable.

One an half gallon, about 6 litres. When I check the plugs the #4 was light gray and all others darker gray with marks of oil soot. So the engine is burning oil in three cylinders.
Last summer the oil consumption and cold start smoking was as bad as now. Thats why the exhaust valves, exhaust guides and intake & exhaust valve seals was changed last winter
I'm waiting to get the big block head gasket and then I'm going to swap the cylinder block & pistons.

Are you positive the seals weren't damaged upon installation? it's very easy to do.
This thing has to be a smoke machine if it burns 1 quart every 167 miles.

I think a compression test would be a good place to start. .5 of a litre per 1000 miles is about what mine have burned.

Everything is possible but this was not my first engine overhaul. I used the Athena gasket set. Maybe next time some other brand.

At that rate, the engine/back end of the bike will be covered in oil or as many have said pumping smoke.

He would be spending more for oil than gas. My 850 will sometime use a qt in 1000 miles depends on how I'm riding It's never been apart 50K miles

I put 55,000 miles on my 85 GS1150E and it never used more than a PINT of oil between oil changes every 3000 miles.

1.5 GALLONS would have the entire bike soaked in oil, the rear tire so slick it wouldn't be able to be ridden let alone even stood up without sliding away from the person....something doesn't sound right if its not smoking like a steam engines smoke stack!!!

There are no leaks in the engine and the exhaust tip is dry. The bike smokes most when warming up. When riding it smokes when opening throttle after slowing down.
The engine seems to burn all the oil.
When starting cold engine it takes few seconds before it starts to smoke. I think it should smoke immediately if the valve seals were worn? There is Motul 7100 10W 40 oil in the engine. Before Motul there was Delvac MX 10W 40 and it smokes more.
Anyway in few weeks I should get the big block mls head gasket. Then it?s time for the busa pistons and GS1150/GSXR1127 cylinder block.
