As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I am confused, I thought that the 83 1100E did not have a mechanical advance, so what is teh centrifugal device behind the pick ups?

Is this stock or someone else's mod?

Thanks,
Derrick

83 1100E's have a stock mechanical advance behind the breaker plate.
I have that bike and I recently made some modifications to the advance unit.

Re: Mecahnical advance...1983 GS1100E

The reason I made some changes was the stock ignitor on the 1100 was toast and I didnt feel like throwing $350 at a new one. I had on hand, a Dyna S ignition for a 79 750. It will not fit the 83 1100. The shaft on the 1100 is much longer than that on the 750. I also had a points breaker plate and counterweight assembly from an 850, plus a breaker plate for a 750. The counterweight mechanisms between the 1100 and 850 are not interchangable either. The crankshaft mating end of the 850 advance unit is larger than on the 1100. The springs are different between the two also.
The 1100 springs are lighter. The 850 springs are heavier and (should) delay the onset of the advance slightly. I turned down the mating end of the 850 advance to fit into the recess on the 1100 crank. This gave me a shaft short enough for the rotor to be clear of the ignition cover. I filed the rotor to fit the 1100 crank end and I used the 850 advance springs to delay the advance curve. I delayed the advance on my 1150 electronically and that solved a heating problem I was having with it. The 1100 doesnt have an oil cooler (yet :-) ), so whatever I can do to keep it running cooler is likely a good thing.

New ignition system...........cost..........about two hours of labor in modifying parts. :-)
