  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

Mikuni RS38's

Well I scored a set of RS38's for my 1150, cleaned them up and jetted and set them to what sudco recommended for a GS1150. I ran new fuel lines with a nice filter and fired it up... WOW!! These things are awesome!

Later that night when my wife came home to take over with my son I decided to give them a road test. DOUBLE WOW! I feel like the bike gained 20hp!! The front wheel will point to the sky easily and it feels smooth throughout the revs. I need to do some throttle chops and see how the plugs are burning, but I am amazed at how close the jets and settings seem for the first shot at this.

The only thing I don't like is I have no reserve for now. I am running the stock petcock in the prime position because I don't see a vacuum to tap into to operate the petcock. Sudco told me there isn't one, and I should get a pingel.
 
Hey Ben - that's cool that everything worked out with those RS38's. I'm in a similar situation with my petcock and the CR's. In fact, I asked a question on the same thing a while back;

Motion Pro sells individual synch. port adaptors and I think I'm going to try and tap into one of those ports once I get everything back together as I'd like to keep the stock petcock if possible.

You sound real happy, how smooth are they compared to the stock 1150 35mm CV's? Is your bike stock otherwise.

I know alot of guys run them but, have also heard they are too twitchy for street. I'm sure they have more power; how about smoothness compared to CV.

I have 36mm slingshot CV flatslides to swap out for 1150 36mm CV's but been holding off.
 
If you want to keep the stock petcock & have reserve, you can pull vacuum from where the adapter tubes screw into the head to sync the carbs. Ray.
 
Sweet, I even have 4 brass adaptors for my old motion pro mercury gauges. I will probably screw one of them in to feed the petcock vacuum.

As far as riding with these carbs on the street... Two times I hit the throttle really hard for a short period of time and probably had the accelerator pump squirting pretty hard. After doing this the motor seemed a little choked with fuel and wanted to stall, in fact it did stall once. I just reved it a little and cleared it out.

But I have not made any adjustments, and the accelerator pump is adjustable. Also the short burst I did was stupid and not normal riding.

These carbs seem perfectly streetable, for the short ride I did with them. But I won't make any adjustments until I get my kerker exhaust painted up and bolted on the bike.

Pontiacstogo runs some CR's with no accelerator pump on the street and I think he loves them?? So many people I can think of run mikuni vm33's, CR's and FCR's... I have not heard complaints about riding on the street.

You have to learn to roll the throttle on these and let the pumps work for you. They should kick in at 1/4 throttle and quit at 3/4 throttle. If you just whack these carbs open you lose your intake velocity. Once you're ripping through the gears you can just hammer them.

just a tip if you do the brass adapter for the petcock, use a dab of hightemp red loctite on the threads or the thing might unscrew on you while riding.
 
Come next month I will be actively looking for a set of RS36s, so if anyone runs across a set, let me know!! Please?? :)
 
Funny story... Now I had already received my pilot and main jets from sudco, along with all new bowl gaskets and a accelerator pump rod boot. Before I ordered these parts I pulled carb #1 top to make sure the needles were correct, but noticed them in the -2 position... Sudco recommends -3. So I get the box from sudco and carb jets all set and button up the bottom half... I figure I just need to adjust the needles and run some fuel line and I am good to go. I get to carb #4, pull the top and NO GASKET AT ALL!! Right now I am running a distributor cap cardboard box gasket I cut... ;) And it works! It almost took longer to cut that stupid gasket than it did to clean up and set the carbs. :rolleyes:

The new gasket and a set of dyna wires are coming from sudco right now. I wasn't going to be stopped when I was so close!

I should go and buy some header paint and clean up my kerker 4-1-2 system and get that on. If I ever find a headlight I will be very happy!
 
Josh, I have a nice set of 36s I'm not going to use. Are you going to go back to fighting with pods or try to make them work with an airbox? Ray.
