Mikuni VM Accelerator Pump Applications

Our GSs equipped Mikuni VM series carbs were never equipped with accelerator pumps but Mikuni did manufacture VM series accelerator pumps back in the 70s. IIRC Kawasaki KZ650's & KZ1000's VM28s were equipped with Mikuni OEM accelerator pumps and I have VM29 Smoothbore literature stating this item existed. I believe the kit included 4 new Float bowls with #1 & 2 connected & #3 & 4 connected with fuel line. The accelerator pump was attached to the #3 float bowl and attached to the throttle linkage with an adjustable shaft. The one I have seen was equipped with the telltale S/B 17mm nut on the bottom of the float bowl. Sorry I don't have a picture handy

My question is about VM Accelerator Pump kit application:

1) Did Mikuni produce one VM accelerator pump kit which was interchangeable betwenn VM26, VM28 & VM 29 Smoothbores

2) Any idea what this item cost brand new? How about today?

I have had the Kaw set ( pumpers ) in my hands and as I remember things, the bowls and all are the same from the 26 and 29s are concerned..so that would tell me that they are interchangable.


EDIT...I should mention the bike was my buddy back in Detroit..was a 76 kawasaki KZ900 I do believe.

Nothing found on Ebay with any KZ900 pumpers..but then again maybe my buddies were converted at some past point. I didnt have any luck finding any kits either.

I would doubt there was ever a kit available to the public to convert the VM's. I've seen and worked on the pump equipped Kawasaki version and it's not just the bowls you'd need, the operating mechanism for the pump has to be added to the cross shaft too.
I'm not a Z expert but I have the impression they were maybe a one year only thing on the Z's.

Do you recall whether the Kaw set ( pumpers ) had the 17mm drain nut on the bottom of the float bowl?

The big nut was a 29 smooth bore only iitem

Mikuni sold an add-on accelerator pump kit back in the day - it allowed you to install this on a variety of carbs.

Kawasaki KZ650 and KZ1000 models came with accelerator pumps in 79/80 on USA bikes ONLY. This (together with the reed value ports on the head) allowed Kawasaki to meet emissions standards although in reality they worked around the standards.

A handful of VM29's were sold with accelerator pumps installed by the factory. I'm only aware of a handful of these ever being sold.

VM29 float bowls are not interchangeable with VM26 or VM28 carbs.

THe carbs on the KZ1000's don't have the 17mm head head. These were only on the VM29's and very early Z1 VM28's (a different style carb).

VM29's can fetch $600-$700 without the accelerator pump. I think a mint set in good working order would fetch more than a new set of RS34's...

My ATK 490 has a big Delortto with an accelerator pump. That is on a Rotax engine. My old '72 Guzzi Eldorado had them too.

What do you guys think a NOS Accelerator Pump kit might fetch? $50, 100 . . . .more?

It's difficult to say - not many people want to add them to carbs. When I sold the kit I had, it was bought by a vintage road racer as he said he could use it on his period race bike. I would think in the $75-$100 range.

I have a set of Mikuni Carbs that are VM28's with a accelerator pump. Most people tell me they are VM29's but Im positive they are not. My buddy gave me his 1978 GS750 and these carbs were on the bike. I would like to trade them for VM29's without the accel pump and have posted it in the for dale trade area of the forums.
