I just bought this tank off ebay for, get this, $52!

Note the OEM box it came in... The description said it had rust on the filler cap edges, which seems odd. I opened the box and thought the seller was correct about the description, but a closer look and I saw that it's actually just clear coat peeling off!

The tank is in excellent shape, no rust on the inside, absolutely nothing wrong with the paint, the clear can use a good buff.

part number looks like 44100-49230-080. I'm pretty sure it's a 1980 gs750ET tank, still needs confirmation.

next to the stock L tank:D

If it turns out to not fit your bike, and if it turns out it will fit my 1100, I will be happy to take it off your hands! Won't cost you anything at all!
Thanks!

here are the tanks mounted on the frame:

here's the first mounting issue-as it's a '79 L frame, I'll need to relocate the tank mounts to the standard placement. Gonna put the triple trees on to check.

The prominent issue lies in the rear:

Hmm:-k maybe fabricate a new mounting bracket. Any ideas?

absolutely, let me just ding in some knee dents with my roofing hammer, finish it off with a bob job with my rusty sawzall, just how you like it. a one-off custom!

I kine the fit at the front a LOT better. Hows the seat fit?

New Work Space!

Hmm an L with a decent tank

All you need now is a decent E frame to go with it & you'll have a great bike ;)

what shape is your L tank in?

Some rust through the paint on top, which is a shame because the rest of it is in good condition, rear left corner spot painted probably due to rust, minor pitting in top of tank. The rest of the inside is pretty clean.

Still not sure what to do. I wanted to paint my tank black and would feel guilty as hell ruining the E tank. The L tank would be easier on my conscience, but it's an L tank! Might just look for another tank, one that FITS my bike:cool:

You should throw your triple clamps on there and see it there is interference with that bigger tank.

So you're gonna take a very nice E model tank and try to stuff it onto an L frame?

I honestly do not understand why on earth you have made this your life's goal.

The mounting points at the rear create an obvious problem, plus you will have to build a totally new seat pan and seat.

There are potential clearance problems between the tank and the top of the engine, not to mention you're not sure if the triples will clear the tank at full lock.

Plus, you're contemplating the sin of stripping off nice factory paint.

Sell the tank to someone with a blue E model, or maybe trade them for a beat-up tank you can fart around with.

Or strip and paint your original tank. Or adapt some other tank that you think looks better.

So I found out that this is actually an NOS tank, never been fitted, so it would be a SIN to mount it and repaint it. Looks like its going to ebay. The seller made the mistake of saying it's a 750 tank, it's actually an 80-81 gs1100e tank. I waxed it but it still has fine scratches in the clear coat, perhaps some buffing compound can resolve this. pics:

I know someone with THAT exact bike that might jsut want that tank. His looks good, but has some sun fade...
