Modified Design's 1984 gs850g Project

This will be the first motorcycle I have ever worked on, built, or even owned. I don't even have a motorcycle license yet! I have worked on old cars, new cars, done body work, etc... but never anything on a bike.

I decided I wanted to start riding so I'm diving in head first and learning everything I can about this bike and redoing everything before I even start riding it. In the meantime I will be taking safety courses and getting my license.

I know a lot of people here seem to hate them but I dig the cafe racer style so that's what I'm doing. It's not going to be a true cafe, just sort of inspired by them. I have several parts ordered, including my carb rebuild orings from cycleorings.com, handlebars, grips, mirrors, headlight/blinkers, brake rebuild kits/pads, etc... and way more to go.

I'm hoping I can get help from everyone here when I need it because I have already learned a TON just by haunting this site for the last week. I already read the newbie mistake list, downloaded the service manual, the carb rebuild pdf, the wiring diagram, and the owners manual, all from the links on this site. Yall are awesome.

Anyways, the bike had a windjammer on it. I've removed it, but so far that is it. But it's only been a week or so and I haven't received my parts quite yet. It does run and drive, and I picked it up for $700 with a clear title.

Great bike to start with. I would concentrate on all the usual mechanical suspects such as carbs, valves, brakes, suspension, electricals etc before you invest too much $ and thought into cosmetics and style changes. You can always get to those issues after you have got it purring and your ideas as to style might evolve and crystallize over time.

That's what I'm doing, mechanical first. I only removed the windjammer while waiting on parts. I'm rebuilding the whole front end after the carbs so I ordered lights as well.

I also have a 1984 Honda vf750f Interceptor laying around. Anyone parts on it I could mod my gs with?

Seperated and labeled some wiring. Removed the seat, rear fairing, lights, and labeled more wiring. Just bored and over excited as I wait for all my orders to come in. I'm considering admitting to my self that at some point I will be wanting pods and a new exhaust and going ahead and get a stage III kit before I start to rebuild the carbs.

Carbs, airbox, wire harness all removed. Labeled everything and took pics.

Cafe racer seat/fairing came in today so I set the tank and it on the bike just for a sneak peek mockup pic. I love the fairing I chose, looks so sick on the bike.

Obviously some cutting and welding is in the frames near future. This week I probably won't get much done as today I signed papers on my new building for my second business, a skate shop. It's 3 suites down from my tattoo studio. I'll be busy with construction on it all week but I may find time to pull the engine.

I'm tearing down to the frame, grinding off tons of worthless mounts, welding on a new rear bar to fit the new fairing, and then painting the whole thing. As I rebuild the bike I will be rebuilding every component I can such as brakes and carbs, etc...One huge mod I'm doing is hiding all wiring. I'm building a tray under the new seat area to hold everything. Going to position the battery so that it's some what hidden but I can't hide it fully. Hopefully it will be ready by spring.
