A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi everyone,

I performed another valve clearance check yesterday and took a few more pictures to add as an addendum. Pictures to cover questions like...

What do I turn to move the cam lobes?

Where do I measure?

DSCF2890.jpg

How do I get the shim out?

I hope the addendum will help the new mechanics who join us. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Thanks Basscliff, a picture tells a thousand words as they say.

ok, you missed one important point.

How are you keeping your fingers so clean?

He said he "performed another valve clearance check yesterday", but I'll bet it was on Nessism's bike. :-k

.

I bet Ed's shims look polished, not that he polished them, they just naturally stay that way.

Did you notice the shine on that shim that he was moving with the tweezers? :-k
It seemed to be rather shiny.

I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. shim.

You're using a tripod, aren't you? Cheater!

Hi Mr. robertbarr,

Believe it or not, I use a 4 year old Fuji Finepix A210 3 megapixel digital camera. It cost $189 when I bought it. It's not much, but it's easy to use and takes great pictures (for its resolution class). I don't use a tripod. It's just me and my two hands. Sometimes I have to be a contortionist to set up the shots.

Thank you for your induglence,

BassCliff

Cleanliness is next to impossible

Hi Mr. Headphase,

The camera may add a little weight, but it takes off dirt. ;)

If you spray some Simple Green on your hands, rub it in and let it dry, it makes clean-up a lot easier. One of these days I'll pick up a box of nitrile gloves. My fingernails are dirty for days after I do a valve check.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Hi Mr. Steve,

I'll bet Mr. Nessism's bike never needs valve checks. Something about "immaculate combustion"? :D

And thank you Mr. stevepoole1, and Mr. Hoges, for the kind words. I do my best to help out around here. Thanks to Mr. Steve and others for being such excellent teachers and guides concerning these classic bikes.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
