A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

this may be a dum question, im kinda new to wrenchin on this old bike 1977 gs750, but ive pulled the 4 outer shims and the 2 right side ones are marked 2.80, the left intake is a 2.85, left exhaust is 2.75, is this abnormal? keep in mind i dont really know the history of maintenance, rebuilds valve jobs ect

I hope when you pulled them you put some thing back in there places before you turned the motor, as cam damage can and will occur
No that would be normal to have various different sizes

It sounds normal to me, I suspect the valves have not been checked in a while or possibly ever since they in the top of the range. I have a kit and the largest shim is I believe 3.00. How are the clearances?

I would recommend getting a metric feeler guage with even increments .03, 04 etc so you can see exactly what you have. It is also better to be at the top of the clearance range than close to the minimums.

No, it sounds pretty normal. However the shim may not be the size marked on it because of wear or because a previous owner ground them to a smaller size. Best check the actual thickness when you do the shim inventory.

ok the smallest feeler i have on hand is a .04mm and it wont slide in, i just wanted to make sure somthing screwy goin on there thanx

Get Steve's spread sheet, and a much smaller shim

Use the small shim to confirm how much clearance is needed for every valve you can't get the feeler guage under

If you have to change more than 4 down, you should do a compression check after the shims are changed

You don't want to end up like the 2 burnt valves guy over in 4 cylinder
