DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Murray's 4 into 2 Carb kit

Is it possible to outperform stock? Yes. Is it likely? Nope.

Why do people bother with bodges like this when the OEM system works just fine?

In my inexperienced opinion, I doubt performance would be improved. Those intake manifolds aren't a smooth radius. Also, I highly doubt you'd get any gains for that $600 spent. I'd spend that money on many other things before I spent it on that.

On my 650, the manual wants the two inner carbs synched to a slightly lower vacuum so two carbs wouldn't work if this matters...That said, some 550s(?) came with two carbs, I think.

Hi everyone, interesting topic. Yes, some years gs550's came with dual two barrel carbs. The Murray system has dual single barrel carbs with two y shaped aluminum manifolds. They sell many kits for gs550, cb750, gs1100,xs1100 ect. The mikuni vm34 's are cheap to buy on ebay , about 200 usd for a new pair which is less than I can buy a single carb for my mx bike. I think that's the only way he can sell those kits at that price, those hand made manifolds must be worth about 400 a set. For the bigger bikes, these kits don't seem to make much sense because you can buy a set of mikuni rs36's for a little more than a 100 dollars more. From what I understand, there are no new carb options for gs550/650, so maybe this system is worth a second look for people that want new carbs. I don't think someone would go to all that trouble making manifolds if the bikes ran like crap. The system is very simple, but you would have to watch for throttle cable stretch to keep the carbs in sync. Perhaps a check on the cafe racer forums would get more info.

Unless you are trying to resurrect a barn find that did not have any carbs with it, there is seldom a need to buy 'new' carbs. Usually, there is a decent selection of used sets on eBay or other sources. Yes, most of them will need to be 'rebuilt', but rebuilding a set of carbs is pretty much standard operating procedure, anyway, so it's nothing unusual.

Also, unless you have some special 'need', like all-out racing or you need a 'special look', the stock carbs work well and do not require any re-engineering. That makes the expense of the manifolds and the carbs to match them seem rather unnecessary.
