I just couldn't help myself......

The Vetter is just so practical and the temp dropped back down to 5 Celsius with possible snow so I guess our winter isn't over yet, and usually not too far behind any snow is rain around here. Took her out for her first run around the block. Ran great, no leaks, no strange noises. So far so good. Sure feels good to have her back on the road, I'll try not to crash her this time around :D

Well....things are not good. I've got blue smoke still coming out of the right side exhaust. I've done the ol' 'Italian tune up' in hopes it would improve things but I still have blue smoke when I throttle it. Nothing on decel. that I can see so at least my seals should be good. The spark plug is showing a bit of wet oil each time I pull the plug as well, the other 3 are dry so I'm guessing my problem is with #4. I'm going to do a compression check and then I guess I'm going back into the engine...again :( One thing I'm thinking is maybe I put a ring in upside down. Man, what a pain in the backside.

Ya, I had already done my carb synch, I wished it was that easy. I pulled the engine apart this afternoon. Found the two rings on #4 piston were upside down. The stamped 'R' on both of them was facing down, so I guess that was the issue, if I remember right if the rings are upside down it allows oil to pass..anyone care to confirm that for me? The REAL CRAPPY thing is the base, head and cam cover gasket are toast...arrrrrrr

I think I'm going to go have a couple of beers.....

That sucks man. Drink Beer, Feel Good.

I might hassle you when i start rebuilding my top end:pray:

Don't worry Charlie, it's just me.... Why do something once when you can do it 3 times. It really is me though, the first time I obviously didn't measure the sleeves properly, this time I put the rings on #4 upside down :o oh brother..

I was actually expecting to see angled rings but these ones are straight at their ends. I did check the stagger and #4 was not staggered properly for some reason, must have moved while it was going into the sleeve. They weren't on top of each other by no means but they were closer together than they're supposed to be.

There can be an angle on the inside edge of the ring allowing the compression to get in between the ring and ring land forcing it outwards against the cylinder wall.

I'm not saying that is the case with your rings, just that it a possibility. It depends on what the ring manufacturers specify.

(I did see the 2nd ring's angle you are speaking of in the service manual)

Well, I took the head off, found that I put the rings on #4 upside down :o fixed that. Put everything back together and she was smoking on a cold start up like crazy. I had left the Z1 Vesrah valve seals in there thinking they would be fine..wrong decision. Pulled the head again and installed new OEM seals

I tell you one thing, I'm getting faster at this that's for sure.

So she's all back together. Unfortunately I haven't resolved the blue smoke on start up, funny thing is she doesn't push blue on WOT or on decel, but I'm done pulling the head for now that's for sure. Couple of other things I did while in there this last time, I put in progressive spring in the forks, world of difference. Bleed all the brakes, now the front aren't nearly as spongy as they were. Also cleaned up the gauges, the original set which was perfect took some damage during the crash so I put in a replacement that actually had a cob web in the lens, :D found enough parts in the shed to put together a perfect set again, looks way better. I'll put the FM2 fairing back on one of these days, I bought one from a fella in Seattle that is perfect. I tell you, it sure is a nice ride this bike.

Well I've torn the engine back down to the base..again...This is getting embarrassing and a bit tiring to be honest. I put in new piston rings, pulled apart a few different heads and measured all the valves and put the thickest ones I had back in the original head. I measured the 'valve wobble' and the biggest measurement is about .008, one one of the exhaust valves, the rest of the exhaust valves are all about .005. All of the intake valves are a bit less actually. That was a recuurent theme on the 3 heads I measured the 'wobble' in, the intake valve wobble was always less, guess that makes sense. Put in another new set of valve seals, that makes 3 now  This time the only force I used to put them on was my thumb. Well I buttoned everything up today and by 7:30pm was able to take her out. She rode nice as usual and I couldn't see any smoke, but again it's hard to tell when you're riding it. A very good sign was the colour of the plugs when I returned. All 4 were nice and tan, not a single drop of oil on the plugs which was happening before. So the real test will be a cold start up of course but things are looking good so far. So, she's back together once again.

I keep posting these pictures but I have to laugh because it doesn't look like I've done anything :D Keep your fingers crossed for me on the cold start in a couple of hours.

Sat for 2 hours, fired her up and NO SMOKE!! I am one happy camper...finally, I can just enjoy riding her. Man what a process, but at least I learned lots.

Arrrrrrr....started her up this morning and same old thing, clouds of blue smoke. I have no clue what is causing this now so I'm just going to change the oil and ride her. Maybe it'll improve after a while??
