If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I was just tinkering with my bike I just bought and decided to look at the air filter. It looks like it was cut out of some old yellow foam like seat cushions are made of?

I have a bit of a goofy model (1983 GS400E) so I don't know how easy it will be to find a replacement. But is this really bad or have others done this and its coolio?

It's a pretty standard bodge when you're running a bike on a tight budget - you can get them to run fine. If it is running fine then you've got no problems. I've done it quite a few times, needs must and all that, and it works

Having said that some of those bikes did have foam filters - not sure about your model but it could be standard fitment anyway.

Those filters work REALLY well &, if cleaned CORRECTLY & cared for, last a long time. Clean it in a pan of Simple Green or Dawn dish soap & water, & rinse. Let it air dry. After it's dry, drizzle, NOT soak! it with motor oil or air filter oil & put it inside a zip lock bag. Squeeze the filter to work the oil into it. After you have it worked in evenly, take it out of the bag & re-install. Ray.

That's nothing, my bike had several rectangular SOS sponges in place of the air filter.:-k

I did a quick check of Bikebandit even though I figured you probably already had. They have a GS450ED here: http://www.bikebandit.com/suzuki-motorcycle-gs450ed-1983/o/m6028

Check out the fiche and see if it looks like yours. It may be that they changed something on the 450 engine to make it a 400 but retained the air cleaner.

Ja, dat ees eet.

The 400 is a totally different motor (8 valve tscc, like the 750/1100's) but I am starting to think the rest of the bike is the same. I still need to figure out if the carb's are the same, should be, but how can you tell?

I cleaned it with solvent (electric motor solvent, all I had, hmmmm) and then drizzled some mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 on there, yknow, to make it go faster. I mushed it around and put it back in.

I have a foam filter on my scooter, but I was wondering if it was a special gas/oil resistant kind as opposed to cutting up a camping foamy...

Mine had a Scotch Brite pad as the air filter when I bought it. I' d buy a real one.

Another good source of foam for filters is the grey sheets that come in computer motherboard boxes. Just the right density. In the 750 there is a snorkel that the filter covers. I cut the sheet to fit the snorkel cylinder, oil (K&N filter oil), wrap it around and wire or zip lock in place.

One layer works fine but if you're running a touch rich add a second layer.

Give it a try. You can usually get lots of it free from the local computer store as they just throw it out.

cheers all,
Spyug

I have tons of packing foam at work, so the foam itself isn't special? No need for oil resistan, or specific cell size or anything?
