DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Here is the bike the day I got it.

Then it sat for a couple of weeks and I got to work on it.

Now just have to wire the engine with the harness, the attempt for fire it off. Then we can get down to the guts of if anything is wrong we can go from there. I have another set of handlebars I am prolly gonna put on but still debating. I really just want to ride for now, then we will begin to personalize it. Stay tuned for more updates as we go along this journey of a bike that is 3 years older than I am. I am excited about this classic. Debating on leaving it stock or bobbing it. Thoughts are welcome

Hi Brian, Looks like you are missing parts or have you removed some?
Side covers?

Andy

Good stuff man, If I were you I'd go stock until all the mechanics are figured out. Be meticulous about the electrical and don't cut corners. Get a NEW regulator/rectifier and plug in the stator straight to it skip the run around through the ignition. skip all the hack jobs from other models. this will save you some headaches. Once you got it running I highly recommend pulling those forks apart and clean them and reassemble them with new oil and fork seals. If you can through some progressive springs in there and upgrade it, they cost about 80 or less if you price around. Fun project you got going there.

Most people don't like those L-model bars, myself included. If you have another set that's a more standard style (and while everything's already aprt), I say go for it.

I put superbike bars on mine after about a month of riding with those. did not enjoy getting blown around and I don't particularly like those windscreens but my superbike bars did the trick. not a bad 20 bucks spent I'd say.

+1 for superbike bars on a GS1000L. Very comfortable position.

Yeah i am missing the side covers. Was planning on making some after i get it running. Planning on wiring and spinning the motor by hand maybe next weekend.

Thanks guys its gonna be a blast

Keep your eye on the for sale forums. the side panels pop up from time to time. I have a left side with no emblem I can part with. No right side though.

Test fit of Vulcan tank

here is the test fit of the Vulcan tank

Vulcan rear fender on. Also the bike is now running. Now to reshape the air box, and rewire the whole bike and it will be done for now until I get another hair.

Well got all the wiring done. Key made at Suzuki dealer. Started to tune the engine and could not figure out why it was running so poorly. Checked the compression and center 2 cylinders have no compression. So now I get to start looking for rings and maybe pistons. Anyone know of a good source and reasonable price vendor?

Do you know for sure it's the pistons or rings? If the valves haven't been adjusted, it could be that too. (Along with a couple of burnt valves as well, probably.) Depending on the mileage, could also be worn cylinders.

Gonna start tearing it down before I go to ordering parts. But I figure while I have it apart go ahead and replace all I can.
