Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

My DIY paint job

Congrats on a job finished. She looks great. Looks as though you're going to have to back to black that plastic now to get it as shiny as the paint. Curious how you painted the white on the tank, did you spray the white down first over the whole tank then tape?

Very nice. But I can tell your bike is female. It's parked in front of a mirror.;)

I painted the tank and fairing all blue first. Then masked it off and painted the white over it, sanded it all with 1000 and laid 2 coats of clear. Turned out good for an amateur, but not perfect.

Good job! I did mine myself also after getting lots of excellent advice on here and I'm glad I tried it.

I'll be doing the next one myself... and I'm looking forward to it so much I'm building a new shed that can double as a spray booth :D

The bike looks nice. You should be very proud. It's tougher then most people think, but the feeling of satisfaction when it's done, is it's own reward.

Looks great, nice job.

As AZR stated, using Back to Black on the plastic and rubber will really highlight your hard work.

Best to get a good spray gun this time.

Looks great to me. I'll have to go back to see the before pics.

You want to do mine for a bottle of CC and a case of Kokanee?

To be honest, my body shop guy quoted me 850.00 to roll my bike into his shop and pick it up with a new paint job. All the paint, paper, supplies and HVLP gun cost me half that so I probably paid myself 8 bucks an hour to do it myself. I had to do the main fairing twice because I wasn't happy with the first job. Good experience but I wouldn't do it again. Thanks for the compliments. Bob

I have a spray booth at work, but I'm not sure I want to tackle the job quite yet. At least I don't have a fairing to worry about.

We have a local painter that gets great reviews, and he does prep work. I'm going to pay him a visit this month for a quote, and I anticipate it to be in the $800-1000 range depending on whether I go decals (being made up for GSJim in Toronto) or paint the pin stripes.

That looks awesome! Did you sand the color coats before you cleared?

Looks like you reshaped the seat as well.

I did sand the basecoat to get rid of the lines between colors and also sanded the clear between coats. You can't see or feel the transition from blue to white. The seat is stock.

I painted my 1150 back in the day when paint was paint and cancer was only a clear coat away. Todays paints are a lot safer to use, but the old two part nasty stuff from back then was almost indestructable. My son is a painter/body guy so my painting days are behind me.
By the way, very nice job.;)

Turned out good for an amateur, but not perfect.

You did better than many I have seen that are "pros", so I would be proud.
It is hard to be perfect, there are many things that can be overlooked doing paint and bodywork:D

You learned, possibly saved some money (time being " free" of course), and endedup with a great looking cycle. Nice job. I also dig the low fairing.
