All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I bought this bike as a project. I bought it as nonfunctional. So far I have replaced the battery and I am waiting on a new r/r as the last one I bought was faulty. Hopefully after I install thre new r/r I will have power. So far it act like it has no power. Any Ideas? FB_IMG_1568675821663.jpg 1979 Suzuki GS850 w/Shaft drive

Tell us your year and model (put them in your signature) and many voices will chime in with what steps to take first.

Welocome to the brotherhood and to the site.

Welcome!

Looks like an 8V, GS850G/Shaftie. Are you keeping the fairing & bags attached?

Ed

You can post them for sale in the proper section. I'm sure there are members interested in fairing & luggage bags.

Another GS that survived with the Vetter motorcycle saving system! No wonder Craig Vetter is in the AMA museum. Always a beautiful, preserved bike. underneath. Nice bike! No Power? Check the main fuse. They can get blown trying to jump the dead battery

Welcome aboard. My first bike was a GS1000G that also had a few issues so you're in good company. There is a user here "Nessism" who has a "newbie list" for things you should work on to bring it up to full speed.

On the RR you should get a Shindengen series (Nessism sometimes sells tested ones). They are bulletproof & help save your stator (which you should also check for health).

Other things you should work on are a valve check & a carb rebuild with an O ring kit from Rober @ Cycle O rings http://www.cycleorings.com/ also a member here. By far the best & cheapest way.

At the very least you should also flush the brakes & change the lines for some modern braided ones. You could also look at cleaning out the calipers & master cylinder or like many here you could also upgrade to a more modern system (link to thread below my sig.).

Oh.. and don't forget to grease your splines (with Moly paste).

I'm with you on the Vetter stuff, not my cup of tea either but some like it. www.z1enterprises.com sells a 7" Headlight (listed for a Kawasaki but fits the GS ok). I may have some "ears" for you, I definitely have some turn signals stashed somewhere if you don't need show quality....

Sargent could cut that seat down for you & recover if you were so inclined, it looks like a good touring seat though.

:)

What do you mean acts like it has "no" power? Do you mean absolutely no power like even the instrument lights & headlight don't work, or does the starter not try to start the eng.? If absolutely no power, it sounds like a main fuse, bad connection somewhere, or a dead batt. Just my opinion.
