DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Wanting to start over with a Dyna to bring a 1979 GS550 back to life that basically came in a box (with not too many pieces either).
So I do as everyone suggests and look under the cover at the advance mechanism for either a KD or ND and not markings are there.
For those who know what they're looking at...can anyone definitively say which is it that I have?

What differs in a ND from a KD, anyway?

Thanks again,

a 79 550 came with points ignition

ND has condensors mounted with long side visible
KD has condensors mounted with ends visible

Someone already put an electronic ignition in yours

Thanks for chiming in on this one Big T. So that kinda maybe confirms my suspicion that perhaps the engine is from a later 550 (based on condition alone). So does that mean a regular DS3-2 ND will do?

Thanks,

Geoff

Does the engine have a kick-start? And which type of carbs do you have?

Nope...no kick start and I have to ay eyes on the carbs that came with the bike in a box...

...I’ll get back to you on that one.

thanks,

geoff

Those are CV carbs.....found on 1980 and up.
It's likely that you have the stock ignition setup (ignitor and signal coils).

No kickstart also confirms an '80 or later engine. What is the serial number on the engine?

.

What is the manufacture date of the bike (from the VIN label)? If it's 8/79 or later your bike is most likely a 1980 model year model. I think you need the ND version Dyna S. You might want to remove the advance governor and look for a manufacturers stamping.

Looked ad-nauseum. Nothing. Say I purchased the incorrect one...either ND or KD: would it be apparent in fit or function? Oh: and the manufacture date on the VIN is 11/79...

With Thanks,

Geoff

11/79 manufacture date = 1980 Model Year

Get the ND version. The KD business applied to points as far as I understand.

Thank you, Ed. I still think I'll contact Dyna though, and ask them my fit or function question as it pertains to their products replacing ND or KD points.
Then I'll post their reply for those that come after us...

Thank you, everyone!

Interestingly enough, when poking around my assorted bits and pieces in boxes, I did find that KD did make at least make the regulator...
