Hi Mr. dropdead,
You'll find a color wiring diagram on my little website. Let's get the full sized picture up.
Over the years and through all of the different owners, some wiring may have changed. Regardless, right in that area are a couple of wires that connect to the fuel gauge send unit from the gas tank. They are usually yellow/black and black/white. It's also possible that one of those wires (usually green/white going up and orange/white coming back) is part of the stator loop that goes up to the handlebars. That loop can be disconnected, cut back, and taped off. See:
Regulator/Rectifier Replacement. As explained in the r/r replacement guide, connect the three stator output wires directly to the three r/r input wires. Now let's move on to your "mega-welcome".
