A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Need to replace "weather stripping" on GS850 air filter

The rubber weather stripping on the air filter holder has gone missing, leaving a gap as shown in the first image. I know I shouldn't leave that gap open, so I have two options:
1. Use some spare filter material I have on hand and cut it to shape to fill that gap. Filling the gap would compress the filter material, so it wouldn't allow too much extra air through.
2. Find rubber sheet close to the same thickness, and cut that to shape.

I'm leaning towards #1, unless there's some reason to go with the more substantial filler. Any input?

Thanks,

here's the filter material I have on hand.. I could cut it to size. TBD if I should leave it a sheet or cut an opening equivalent to the metal rm of the filter holder.

I know it's been said, but I too have used that weather stripping from Home Depot, works great!

My tips for this universal GS arts and crafts project:

1) Apply the weather stripping to the filter cage, not the airbox. Clean up the metal surface thoroughly so it'll stick, obvs, and do you best with scissors to miter the pieces together at the corners. I usually cut just a smidge long so the pieces compress against each other a bit.

2) Apply grease to the foam. It needs to be able to slide a bit against the airbox surface in order to install the assembled filter.

On the shafties (and several others, but verify), the Uni NU-2436 is a fantastic replacement for the foam.

Oh, and don't throw away the metal cage inside the foam filter element. You'd be surprised how often this has come up over the years.

The stock version doesn't seem to be available any more, at least not in the US, but comes with the cage and all:
You can see the foam seal in the photo.
