    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Negative Battery Post Corrosion

there is often corrosion, every day actually, on my negative battery terminal. you see, unless i am missing a part or a cover of some kind, that sucker hangs out in the wind all day, every day.

am i missing something or should i invent a cap or dob it with RTV? i am really just sick of looking at it, really; that ugly white nasty terminal. plus people comment on it and it hurts my feelings...
 
Sounds like you are missing one of the side covers on your bike. :oops:
We had an '81 450T for a while, and I don't remember being able to see the battery without removing a cover.

A little surface corrosion is inevitable, but it should not build up that quickly unless you have something wrong going on there. Make sure the connections are clean and tight, and put some dielectric grease on there, or even some Vaseline, but NOT RTV. Silicone does nasty things to electrical components.

that's the thing, the side cover (with the GS450E decal) doesn't cover that far down... the battery is where it should be, as is the cover. i think i'll need to look at some other 'E' pics online to be sure.
i'll give it a dab of dielectric grease and see if i can't devise a cap for it. silly Suzuki... thanks for the warning about silicone RTV!

2 years of having a bettery in I have never had anthing build up on the battery.Check all your ground connections and clean them up.
 
Very old battery or charging system overcharging it or a combination of both.
 
by charging system do you think the generator (stator?) is getting there? i'd hate it to leave me stranded as i already take this thing far too far from home on a regular basis...

i'll find another battery. i think since i know nothing of the history of this machine it is due time.

Beg, borrow or ? a voltmeter and check the charging system voltage (at the battery posts) @ 5,000 rpm, then go from there.
 
i get it now. the battery is not the correct one for this bike. the PO or salvage guys put the battery in SIDEWAYS in order to fit it. therefore, it ****es battery fluid out of its breather onto the swing arm, etc and corrodes everything
i need a new battery! i have the proper strap and cover from BikeBandit

BTW the dielectric grease works great in keeping the terminals clean
