Howdy everybody!
The rain stopped, the sun showed its friendly face and the temps went up to a whopping 13 degrees celcius this weekend. Yepp, summer is here

So what to do as a newly become gs owner?
Took my First bike for its First spin in about 3 years
(oh the exciting feeling of loosing my virginity to a 29year old godess called Katana  )

wobbly, terrifying, scary but Fan-fu**ing-tastic!!
But besides that: Loud...
When i turned around the corner down the street the neighbours were already looking down the street (crap). Some shaking their heads, some just nodding in approval with a little smile on their faces as if saying "oh if i wasn't so whipped by the ol' wife i would join you"

Anywho, I had a great little 5 minute run but now its time to face the reality,
i gotta do Something about the mufflers.
The stock trumpet shaped somewhat shiny mufflers, is there Anything i can do to get this a little quieter? havent looked too much at them but if i understand correctly i cant just take out the innards of it to rewrap anything?
Dont want to replace with some shiny aftermarket "deluxe 3000" slipon, atleast not for now, just want it a bit quieter before I have my inspection :P

yeah... I write a Lot. :(

What kind of exhaust system are you referring to, and what kind of baffle is in it now? Stock is quiet so it can't be that.

its a 4-2 what i assumed was the stock exhaust & mufflers.
I should have taken a closer look at it, but I didnt pay much attention to it until i got home (got the bike at my parents garage).

yepp its a crappy picture. Gonna drive over and have a closer look soon :)

That's not stock.

Most aftermarket exhaust systems have a removable baffle in the muffler. I'd pull out the baffle that's currently installed and then decide what to do to make it quieter.

Oh its not?!
Thanks Nessism! I thought it was the original exhaust & muffler or something lol.
will definitely go take a look at it now :)
Just a few screws and pull the sucker out or??

I even took the trouble of uploading a video on youtube in case anyone wanted to hear the freak..

Screw the neighbors has always been my motto..its mine and i will make it as i see fit.

Although many of the European aftermarket mufflers are supposedly pretty quiet, I doubt any are as quiet (and restrictive) as the stock ones. Another thing to consider, is the manner in which you ride....if you want to be neighbor considerate, try short-shifting (do not rev past 3-4000 rpm) around town, or idle your bike for longer than necessary early morning/late nights etc. I doubt a 550 could be highly offensive, ridden like this. Or course, once out of town, on a pork-free stretch, let that thing sing to redline.:D:twistedevil:

loud pipes are more bliss than ignorance :)

I'm sorry but I think loud pipes are one cause of accidents around bikes. I know that sounds counter-intuitive but I also am looking at how I responded to a loud piped bike on Friday that came up from behind me. As is human nature, I turned my head to look for him and honestly had I not been paying better attention to my traffic beforehand I probably could have wrecked.

Lol.. yes loud pipes doesnt bother me one bit.
Honestly i Want my bike to be seen and heard, but as there's no limitation at the inspection, just the inspectors judgement weather or not it's too loud it Can be quite costly and time-consuming for me.
Mysuzyq These ones were apparently Not stock, since i was able to pull out the innards of them, and notice there was No wrapping at all. (and the previous owner decided that it was a smart idea to weld it shut.. no idea how he was thinking there)
But even tho its just a 550 I think its a bit too loud (atleast I think so)
Feel free to be the judge.. But please take into concideration that this was the First time the pretty lil lady had been started for about 3 years, hence the awful idle.
its a Lot better now :)

sounds good, not loud enough for my liking haha

Agemax I'm happy you liked it lol. Although i took the right muffler apart and... well im not so happy anymore.
Can't seem to upload more then 1 pic, but apparently the previous owner welded the narrow end shut. Hope i havent busted any valves or anything "important" :(

Yes, I noticed from your earlier picture they were not stock....my point was that there are European aftermarket mufflers available to you that are not offensively loud (if you choose to go that route)... Agemax could recommend some, I reckon. :D
Looks like the previous owner had a go, in trying to make them quieter by adding the welds. Your bike would probably run a lot better if you did away with his mods, and put in some fibreglass-wrapped baffles to mellow out the sound somewhat.....I agree it's now on the loud side, though it has a healthy rumble to it.

Mysuzyq Thanks! Yes it does sound kinda nice, i would love to "keep the sound" but just a few db's lower :)
working afternoon this week, but friday off so then im gonna drill open the ends and see if a little "ghetto modifying" fixes it. Might even rip down the front of the exhaust and paint it while im at it... oh decisions decisions

Well in case anyone wanted to know, i couldnt remove the darn weld.
Ended up drilling 7 holes each about 8mm (0.3inches) in diameter and tried to pry out the metal that was welded in the end of the exhaust.. no luck.
Put the darn mufflers back on the bike, and yepp.. it sure runs a lot better now.
And the sound? well... Louder thats for sure lol. But also a lot deeper and more pleasant :)

gonna go for a spin tomorrow after the oilchange and after that who knows, might just cut the mufflers open and rewrap them.

I'm at the bottleneck start of a neighbourhood of about 100 houses, and out on my porch I hear everything that goes by. The loudest thing around is the HD next door. After that there are a few trucks, several V8 SUVs and pickups. My GS750 with aftermarket pipes is probably not on top ten, unless I hit 7-8000 rpm, which I save for after I get out of the "children playing" zone anyway.
I can't imagine you really have to worry, unless you're in soccer mom alley...
