Thank you. It's an early birthday gift from my wife.
She's a keeper for sure!
Oh, so's the bike.
The seller wanted me to promise not to cut it up, bob it or rat it out. I wouldn't dream of it, I said!

Great find. That is one nice looking GS. Please keep us posted as to what interesting stuff you find out about it. Good and bad. I wouldn't think there would be much bad with it.

I would have loved to ride it home. The seller assured me it was perfect. Fresh tune up, new battery, cleaned carbs, runs great he said. That's why I got it for so cheap. We started it up and it doesn't run with the choke off. Riding it was out of the question as the engine bogs and stalls with throttle. I'm pretty sure it's a carb issue. Chef is just finishing a set for my 81 GS850 so it looks like this gets the rebuilt ones. My other project will wait a little longer.

A little more since I've had trouble with long posts, shorter is better.

P.O. is 76 years old. This bike sat in the back of the garage. He is a mechanic and bought it in '86 with 5k miles on it. He said it didn't fit in when he rode with his Harley buddies!

Wonder how many he passed as they broke down.
Sympathy?

That sounded really cold as I thought about it. Of course he wouldn't have passed by his buddies, but pick them up if possible!

Keep in mind that the "choke" mechanism is different between the '81 and '83 carbs.

It's possible to convert the '81 carbs to the '83 "choke", if you want. All you will have to do is swap the brackets that hold the cables and the rod that pulls on all the "choke" plungers.

I did this the other way around, when I converted my '80 to use the '82/'83 style "choke" lever on the left handgrip, instead of the knob in the center of the steering stem.

.

I really like that color scheme. I don't think all that many burgundy/black ones were sold. One normally sees the '83s in the blue scheme.

Nice bike. Congratulations on a good score.

That is a fine looking bike, obviously well cared for. Sounds like some carb love is (hopefully) all it will need.
Good luck and enjoy.

You got a good one there, if my wife was buying me presents like that I'd be keeping her to.
We got it in righting chaps "no hacksaw's" and I'm with Mr Steve.
Id love to have ridden it home.

I've noticed a few things about this bike, minor things really. The front of the windjammer bracket is broken. The fiberglass is all in great shape, it won't be hard to weld it back together. There are several leaks when it heats up. Cam chain tensioner, clutch cover, tachometer seals, oil pan, cylinder head, valve cover and end plugs, oil pressure sensor. Nothing really bad but just weeping. Ill wipe it for now but order a gasket set in the fall. Maybe checking the torque on all of these will eliminate some leaks.

It has been hot here, a steady 100 degrees or higher. The windjammer may be nice in the cold weather, but it just may have to go, we'll see. My wife and I rode last night and the corbin seat is great! The built in backrest is just right for her and there is plenty of room between us.

I feel my posting is so disorganized I clutter up other threads, my apologies.

Yesterday I pulled the windjammer and adjusted some shims to get all valves within .051 to .064 mm. I fired it up and after a short ride around the block and it seemed to slowly starve for fuel, then die. Couldn't restart so I pushed it home, ugh!

When I first picked the bike up, a couple of weeks ago, it wouldn't hold an idle off choke. I drained the tank and refilled with higher octane gas, swapped the carbs with newly rebuilt ones (THANKS CHEF) and it ran great. Now it's doing the same thing again. P.O. said he replaced the petcock, which looks to be true. He added an inline filter which my other GS's didn't have. Is there enough vacuum pressure to draw fuel through these filters?

Ok, replaced fuel line without filter. Seemed to start and run ok without the choke. No power though on the road. Back into the garage and noticed exhaust for cyl's 3 and 4 were just warm, 1 and 2 piping hot. Spark is going to 3 and 4. Loosened the drain plug under the carbs and fuel came out. Any thoughts?
