A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

New bars and need shorter cables. Where to find them?

I installed a set of drag bars (keeping the originals in case I want to return to stock someday) but now the cables are much too long. Anyone know what cables would fit the 650E but are about 4-6" shorter? Even a couple inches shorter would help some. Or can I modify my existing cables?

You could try the GS1000S cables...I don't have an order list in front of me, but I believe that is what I ended up using with the Euro bars on my G, at least for the throttle. It was a bit short, but not outside of what the adjustment can handle. You could also consider using 650M cables, which I think is what I used for the choke and clutch. For your E, the choke knob is centre-mounted, right? If so, you won't need to replace that.

EDIT- the 1000S would have had a push/pull throttle. Somewhere in the forum I once read a recommendation on using the 1000S cable, though...I'll have to check my parts list

Looks like the throttle cable will work, but no such luck with the clutch cable. Anyone else know of a shorter clutch cable?

Agree about using cables for a GS bike that has low bars. 650M cables are the obvious choice, but there are others like 550M or 1000S.

I used 650M clutch and throttle cables on my 650g when I changed to Super bike bars.

hello mate; if you go online and look for 'custom' motorcycle supplies you will find a plethora of companies willing to supply you with any component you'll ever need to make your own; if you should feel a little 'ill at ease' doing it yourself then your local motorcycle garage 'SHOULD' be able to do it for you, without any problems whatsoever; or at least know some-one or shop that can; peruse around youtube; it really is easy;
Salisbury; England; it's dark and cold...again

Cutting and soldering is an option, but I see the OP wants to keep his original cables.

For entertainment and educational purposes though, this video is a pretty good example of not-quite redneck cable reworking.

OEM cables are superior to aftermarket in most cases. At least they are here in the US.

hello there my mate; he wouldn't have to doctor his original cables in the least; every component is readily available; although it has to be said that a new cable that fits is so much easier and quicker; Robbie

True enough. I must not have done an adequate job of reading your first post, and had it in my head you had implied that he cut the cable. Going back and rereading, I'm not sure I could have interpreted it that way.

I have no problem getting my hands dirty and making my own cables. Thanks for the link BigD, I already have a spare throttle cable I can use to get started. Thanks for all the help guys. I'm keeping all of the stock parts for this bike because I know someday either myself or someone that loves these old GS's will want it just the way it was intended to look. Alas, I am young and prefer a more aggressive riding position for highway commuting... plus the chicks dig it

Is the M for Katana? The 1000S clutch cable is incompatible with the 650E, but the throttle cable looks like it should work.

So a clutch cable from a 650M is the way to go? I recently switched to an almost straight bar on my '82 650G and although the stock cable is working, I feel a shorter cable would be better. Thanks!
