If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

So I was given a 1980 GS750e that's been sitting since 2005 in a garage and is in pretty good condition that I'm trying to bring back to life. So first thing I did was check the oil level, bought new gas (tank was reconditioned and no gas has been in it since 05) bought a new battery and was going to fire it up to see where I stand. I turn the key, I see power to the lights, signals, brakes, but when I put the switch to run and press the start button...nothing. No sounds or anything. Where should I start? Thanks to everyone ahead of time.

is it in neutral, did you pull the clutch in ? is the run button in the on position ? try shorting the solenoid does it turn over ?

.

It is in neutral, I have the clutch in, the switch is on run and when I press start no sound or anything. I'm pretty inexperienced with working on bikes, but I learn pretty quick so can you explain what you mean about shorting the solenoid? I don't even know what it looks like sad to say. And I'm not sure what the safety for the clutch is either.

the gold thingy on the right hand side, short the two large screws with a screwdriver, and see if the starter motor turns and cranks the engine

check your fuses as well

Great! So when I short it tries to turn over (gas tanks not on yet since carbs are leaking too) So does this mean I have a bad start switch? The glass fuses look ok, the filament is not broken

I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but it looks like there is some type of cable that would be either for a clutch or brake that is loose by the carbs not connected to anything. When I follow up it goes up through the neck of the bike and then I can't tell where. It's not the clutch because when I pull that I can see another cable move

ok, I see now that its the choke level near the gauges so I need to find out what that needs to connect to. I have all sorts of problems here. :) I don't understand since I see a choke level on the left side of the carbs and another one near the gauges?

I answered this in the other thread.

Put the brakes on there, boy!

Go back to post #2 in your 1st thread, click on the link and spend a day or two reading up on stuff

You're waaaay ahead of your self

Pay particular attention to the Top Ten Newbie mistakes because someone wrote it just for you

And, How to Post Pictures on the GSR

So I'm reading through the newbie mistakes and bigcliff's info which is great, but as far as the start switch not working where should I start with that since the bike tries to turn over at the solenoid?

Basscliff's site will have suitable wiring diagram - print one out. Power runs from battery thru main fuse, then up and thru key switch, then back to ignition fuse, then up to kill switch which gives ignition and starter button power. From button it is routed thru clutch safety switch and on to trigger wire on solenoid (that little wire). Lots of places to check/clean.

After you print it out, take it to the local copy center and have it enlarged to 11 x 17. Make several copies in color, then use several different color highlighters to make your traces. It will really help you understand how your bike is wired.

Good idea, I'll head there today. besides going through all the wiring is there any known issues that I should maybe look at first when it comes to the start button not working?

open it up and see, maybe a dead spider in there, or an old nest, or corrosion, all could be possible, perhaps it's melted on the inside, many things could be a cause....

Take it apart and have a look inside...

.

Ok I opened it up and tell me if I'm wrong on the what I'm telling you. The switch did have a dead bug, cob webs ect. Cleaned that out and also took out the copper button, spring and connector from the start switch and cleaned them off till they looked nice and shiny. Tried to start, nothing. I followed the wire down to behind the light and there's two orange/white strips and a yellow/green striped coming from the start switch. The yellow/green striped wire connected to another wire that went to the clutch (is this the clutch safety people are talking about?) So where that wire connected on the clutch looked fine. I even bypassed the clutch and plugged the yellow/green striped to the same color going back to the solenoid, still nothing. Then all 3 wires looks like it gets fed back to the where the yellow/green striped wire connects to the solenoid. I can't find where the two other wires go. So I can't see anything obvious, is there a way I can test with my multimeter to eliminate sections?

Yes. The orange/white wire is 12V throughout your harness. It is powered when the key is ON. One of those wires carries 12V to the kill switch. When the kill switch is in the RUN position it completes the connection and sends 12V back to the ignition down the other orange/white wire. You can check those with a multimeter.

So if I take the volt meter and hold one of the connectors on the yellow/green wire and touch the other connection to ground should I get 12V? Sorry, but I'm not experienced with the multi-meter either.

Also, since I bypassed the clutch and still got no action from the starter button and I am able to crank the motor if I short the solenoid what does that leave? bad switch or wire connection?
