I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

A GS riding friend told me that there was a step-by-step installation thread showing how to install a Polaris (or similar) R/R on an '82/'83 Suzuki Katana. True? If so, where is it? I can't locate it. I want to switch over my GS1100S (and my GS1150, eventually) and unlike some of you I need all the pictographs I can get before I start. Is it really the case that as a side benefit you also get lower oil temp? Wow, what a win-win.

You can choose the SH-775 (Polaris) or the Compufire 3 Phase model. The CH is normally more expensive but better performance (slightly) but mainly it physically uses a much smaller footprint.

Read my link "GS Charging System health".

There was some cheap CF being sold eBay; they maybe gone now I will look.

I've got a couple of SH775's that have been tested and verified as working properly. PM me if you want to discuss obtaining one.

Wiring the unit is very simple.
1) find stator wires and disconnect from the factory harness
2) feed stator wires directly into the SH775 using your choice of attachment. Triumph makes a nice harness that makes this easy.
3) run ground from SH775 directly to the negative battery post
4) run power output from SH775 into where the original R/R plugged in (feeding the fuse box and main harness).

Check for resistance losses in the power output wire between the R/R and the battery.

It's all very simple. Anyone can do it.

Good luck

I am in the process of reviving my old GS1000s and I going to use an SH775 along with a new stator. The SH775 is a lot bigger than the stock part. Where/how are people mounting the SH775?

Thanks

This photo shows a trial install of a SH775 into my old 1000S. I had to drill new holes into the stock mounting plate in that location but the R/R fit thereafter.

Here is how I mounted my regulator/rectifier on my 1979 GS1000e. I spaced it out 1/4 inch using .25X1.00" aluminum. I spaced it out so I could move it towards the rear as much as possible giving me needed clearance for the wire connectors. I also had to relocate the starter solenoid by lowering it about .75" using a piece of thin sheet metal. Never mind the 12volt outlet, it's just there for emergency cellphone charging.

I put mine where the missing tool bag should be.

Mine fit under the battery.

This is how I did mine on my 85 GS550E. I put it in the igniter modules spot and moved the igniter to under the seat. The brown stain on the bracket is what is left of the burned up factory regulator rectifier.

Thanks for the photos. My plate looks like this. Still haven't seen an obvious way to mount it with out moving a lot of things.

Just for reference, here's where the stock R/R lived on this 83 GS850, and where it moved to down below.

You have a 1979 with the separate regulator and rectifier. The post above shows my old 1980 1000S which uses a combined R/R so it's a bit of apples to oranges.
You are either going to have to do some wholesale relocation of parts on the plate in order to fit the SH775 in at that location, or as others have mentioned, there are various other options. Depends on how inventive you feel like being. And if your S is going to be truly a factory original bike I'd just leave the parts as is. It will hold more value that way.

Compufire has been great. Here is a pic of my install on my ‘80 1100L...93BA5F9E-0E0F-43A9-A89A-AB970FF35EF6.jpg
