A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Well, it's time to put new rings in the old girl. It's smoking out of one tail pipe and the head gasket is leaking oil so it's time to pull it apart. I'm going to have the jugs honed while it's a part and put new rings on the pistons. Thought about taking the valves out and putting new seals and lapping the valves while they're out but I think I'll leave them together for now. Only question I have for you guy's that have rebuilt these engines is...do the studs need to be replaced?

no, you do not need to replace the studs. just clean them up of any rust or corrosion that may have attached to them.

personally i would do the valves while you have the head off. you will probably have to wait a day or 2 to get the cylinders honed so why not do it all while its apart?
then you will know its all good and will save having to pull the head off again at a later date

Plus one on the head work, head, exhaust gaskets are expensive, why do it twice? :)

And the fact that, more than likely, the valve stem seals are shot from being 31 years old.

Yep!
Do the head while you got it off.
If I was close enough to you I would be giving you a slap up side of your head just for even thinking about not doing it. ;)

OK,I'll do the heads, I just want to ride some time this year but I know you guy's are right about doing them now. Thanks for the answer on the studs Agemax. Other than Z1 and Bikebandit is there another place to buy valves if I choose to?

why would you want to replace the valves? unless you know they are already damaged, or you want to fit bigger performance valves, all that will be required is a good clean up and lap them in.

I don't plan to, I was just thinking in case I need to I would know of the best place to buy them.
