    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Newbie question about Engine Removal

Hi All I'm new to the forum, I just got my bike a couple of days ago, and i want to restore it. I'm starting to lable the wireing harness as i disassemble it, It looks like the guy was trying to re-do it, its a mess really. :(

Anyways back to the important question, how do you remove the engine, I mean... if it was a chain drive it wouldn't be a big deal but its shaft driven and i've never delt with them before, its got me baffeld :confused: . Is it a spline that slides out of the back of the transmission? if thats the case i can just take the rear wheel, shocks, rear suspension link off and slide the shaft out right?

If anybody have any help or mabye an exploded diagram of the assembly that would be a tremendous help:D

Times 10,000 what Nessism said, wouldn't even think about it without a manual handy. That being said, unbolt the shaft where it connects to the engine, 4 bolts I think. It's shown in the manual. The shaft just slides into place at the wheel end, not secured, but you'll never get it out still attached to the engine.
 
Thanks guys, Yeah i just downloaded the manual, I had downloaded one yesterday but i think it was a "owners manual" lol theres a big difference i didn't look at the title :oops:. lol

HI I had all day to work on my GS. I finally got the rear axle assembly removed, as well as all the air cleaners, and am about to remove the battery box. The new SERVICE manual (not owners manual hahahaha) was very helpful although i cant see the pics very well. I'm about to start removeing the rest of the drive shaft from the transmission. It didn't say anything about this in the service manual but do you have to remove the pivot point on the rear suspension to take the engine out? I have pics but for some reason my phone will email a jpg file but when i save it from my email its some other different kind of file... :mad:

ok thanks guys, i'm gonna take advantage of my day off and try n' get some more work done
 
All we know is that you have some sort of shaftie GS... which one is it? :D

Assuming it's an 850 or larger, when you unbolt the shaft from the flange on the engine, you can then remove the engine without removing the swingarm.

The 650 may be the same, but I don't know for sure.

Sorry I have a GS1000G I think... i dont think its a GS or a GL or whatever the the term is :oops:. I have the engine out and Its striped down to the frame right now. Have you read the thread that Yaddy did... I want to do something similar. I'm gonna cut all the taps that dont need to be there and move everything to the back. I'm kinda stumped on how to move the master cylender up there, I like his idea tho. I'm gonna try to get pics but who knows if my phone will cooperate. :rolleyes:
 
this is the bike as it sits right now... I still have to get that shock off... I think i'm gonna need a puller or just keep hitting it with penetrating oil:-s
