    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

No box rules

Being a old drag racer I like the box being outlawed. But if in the long run hurts the sport and lowers participation its a bad rule. For years the IDBA and pro star did not allow them and finally gave in. Guess its a personal thing whether one likes it or not.
 
I`m almost positive he is speaking of whats called in drag racing a ET box. It allows you to dial in engine kill time going down the track wherever you choose to make your bike run as close to a index as possible plus be more consistent. Some like them ...some don`t.

I like the idea of putting the control in the racers hands, not pure technology with a rider holding on for dear life. That said, putting up rules to limit technology is irritating as well, as the sport can stagnate, and drive the innovators away. It's a tough call, and it may be better to form a seperate class rather then limit a current one.

I agree with most of the comments and like the idea of two classes except for one small problem. At most tracks I attend, very few bikes show up to race. If you make it two classes there may not be enough to make it worth running. It is a tough call. I just see too many reasons for it. Safety being a big one. I see a few problems outlawing it. Cheating is the first. It would be so easy to do and difficult to monitor.

We could alway outlaw electronic fuel injection, shift lights, electric over air shifter, RPM switches, electronic ignitions, electronic tachs......
You can use ignition coils, on/off switch and battery. Points and capacitors maybe too high tech. I am thinking a model T spark box is required. Maybe we should look at not allowing drag slicks while we are at it as well?

If you dont' want to run eletronics and get your A S S kicked come race day, that should be your choice.

I agree. I haven't seen many bike drags, but watching cars "fall on their face" comming out of the hole is rather annoying. :?
 
Yea they get the big hit at the line for 60ft times And then almost stop sometimes before accellerating down the track to run their index
 
Index mod mostly. Lets just say I had a bike that flat out would run 8.90 in the quarter. The current classes are heads up set on a 8.60 which I am to slow for and a 9.20 which I am to fast for. The way us old guys used to do it was I may try a smaller set of carbs or different gearing to slow down to that 9.20 index. With these boxes its possible to lets say run flat out for 3 gears then shut the engine down for again lets say half second then go back wide open. Hey presto your bike just ran a 9.21. With a good leave at the lights you`re a pretty tough customer to beat. remember if someone makes you run under that 9.20 index you lose.Its a cat and mouse game. I personally started running the sportsman index`s due to inexperience and money then gradually went to the pro class where its real racing. Problem is not everyone wants to make that type commitment or has the money. Actually in the long run it took the fun out of it for me too....so I stopped cold turkey one day. I had a heck of a sale. When I quit I had 9 GS1100/1150 engines in my shop.
 
Throttle stops are almost mandatory for index racing if you want to be competitive. Remember, the only advantage you can have in bracket/index racing is having the faster vehicle. Let's take S/C (Super Comp) 8.90 index racing as an example. If you have a bike that can run the index at 165mph, you have an advantage racing a bike that runs 8.90 @ 150 mph because you will be chasing and have a clear view of your opponent and the finish line. I like to watch the 165+ mph Super Gas (9.90) car guys. I have seen S/G cars run 8.0s off the stops. They are unreal!

I ran top gas. Same thing as the other index`s just faster with more to tear up with very little if any more money to win. I had the problem at the time having a bike that was illeagl for pro mod and trying to run top gas. I could run 7.80`s all day long. Throttle stops suck on a turbo. Turbos are not the greatest for index racing. I finally got another chassis and just went all out. Most of the time I still seemed 1-2 tenths off the top qualifier. Came down to a money game most of the time.

Tom, agree 100%. Tstops and some kind of electronics to run them are mandatory for the index classes from what I can tell. When I started the thread I was talking about reaction timers, but Tstops, retard etc. are all part of it. My b i t c h is just that it's a pain to not be able to use the boxes at the smaller tracks. You have to rewire the bike or have two or more bikes.
 
I'm no expert but,

Maybe they are looking at who's paying the entry fee and who the mass's are. Local streetbikes ride in, they race and then they ride home. If it's a small class then it may just die a slow death. I guess it's easy'er to eliminate a part from a hand full of racers then to make everybody else buy one or if they don't they won't even show up. From the sounds of it, it must cost a few bucks or everybody would have them. I think it might just come down to a numbers game and the box crowd are in the fish bowl.

As for me I like an open class, race what you want--- Hi-Tech against the Backyard mechanic. Most of the time I get my butt kicked from those guys but there are a few times I came out on Top and that was really fun.

LOL, Yup. When your use to leaving off the top bulb it can take quite some time making the adjustment. I think my GS wants to go Pro Tree racing when it grows up!

I guess it shows my age, but I like doing it the old fashioned way. I don't even have an airshifter, which would be nice, but when I can beat the bikes that have some of the fancy electonics like I did this weekend, I feel good! In the Summit Series, the bikes run a pro tree (.400) and cannot have any more than an airshifter and a 2 stage rpm device. I have seen the full electronic cars run and I don't see how that is fun, I guess that is why God made us all uniquely different.

If everyone agreed with these two we would be all set! But I think you are right Jake. Most of the bikes I see on test and tune at the local tracks are street bikes that people ride in. It's always been that way. But the number of bikes that run compared to cars is very small. Hard to believe that what the bike classes do has much of an impact on the tracks bottom line.

If you run at a pro race, test and tune will cost you $100 or so depending on the track. If you make three runs your lucky. If you race only once a month, it's not a lot of testing time. It would be great if people could bring some of this talent to their local tracks where they live. The local guys could have a chance to see pro bikes in action and try and out gun them. The pro guys could have a nice resource for testing trying to figure out how to handle the bumps in the track and get the thing to hook up. Everyone wins. Maybe tough running against a TG or SC bike in E/T racing, but that's how we learn.
