If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Ergh! 5 days of 70deg plus weather in front of me and my bike just took a &%$#!

I will give you the course of events in hopes that it will give you a clue of what my problem might be...

Carbs are rebuilt, synced and running well as of a few weeks ago.

The other night I took the bike out for a short ride. Weather was in the high 40s. For the first several minutes the bike was running a little weak, I assumed that it was just a bit cold. I was accelerating mildly when something instantly changed and the bike started running like a bat outta hell. Not out of control or anything, just that my throttle response kicked in and the bike came into full power. Sweet I thought, running like a top! I rode on home, another ten minutes or so and parked it for two days.

The next time I tried to start the bike it was a coldish morning so I gave it a little choke. It did not fire up like usual since the carb rebuild (before the rebuild I had some cold start issues but they went away after the rebuild). I continued to try to start it, had a couple of backfires, decided thaT i'd flooded it and run the battery down so I gave it a rest.

Later I tried a jump start. This time while hooked up to the car, it managed to fire but I had to really milk the throttle to keep it going. It would not idle unless I was attending to the throttle. I was smelling fuel so I shut it down and left it for the day.

So today I decided to get out there and try to analyse things. Here's what I found:

Again, with a jump, I got the bike to fire, again it would not run on it's own. I checked the temp at the pipes. Pipes No. 1,3 and 4 were COLD. Pipe No.2 was hot and appeared to be the only cylinder firing.

I pulled all the plugs and found that all but No. 2 were fouled wet with fuel. I cleaned up and reinstalled the plugs, tried to start with the same result. I checked spark at No.4 and it had spark. Plugs No. 1 and 3 had no spark. Then I rechecked plug 4, no spark. Recheked plug 1, faint spark. rechecked plug 3, no spark. Checked the good cylinder, now it had no spark. Back to plug 4, now faint spark. Now the bike will not fire.

I lifted the tank thinking maybe I would find loose connectors on the coil or somewhere. It all looked ok wiring wise. Bike is now back together and not running.

I have a MARTEK electronic ignition which some on the GSR have stated having trouble with, but to date mine had not caused me any trouble.
A friend has a theary about the kill switch but that doesn't feel right to me, I don't really use the kill switch much and cant see how that would cause intermittant problems.

Any ideas? HELP!!!

I hope the car was not running:eek:, you may have fried your ignitor. I'm not familiar with your ignition system, what mechanism does it use to tell the coils to fire? Did you check your coils? You should be able to measure the primary and secondary resistance.

It has a MARTEK electronic ignition. it spins a rotor which has a hole in it to reveal an LED light of some sort. I did pull this apart since my first post and discovered some issues with the rotor. It was not seated properly and was interfering with the spark advance. Not sure If I managed to fix it yet, batt is on the charger.

I wouldn't know how to go about checking resistance on Prim and Sec, electrical is not my strong suit.

Situation Resolved!

Situation Resolved!

After spending some time with the multi meter and running through all of the troubleshooting tips I could find, I determined that it was a bad signal generator on my MARTEK 440.

Nessism came through in a big way for me with a used but properly functioning unit. During the replacement I also discovered that the previous owner had the rotor installed in such a way that it was pinching down on and preventing the spark advance from moving. This also caused the hole in the rotor to not line up properly with the sensor.

End result... All is now functioning properly. The bike now performs like I had always thought it should ( scary fast ). Thanks again for all the advice and especially to Nessism for his time on the phone and the parts!
