No Title for my GS650G

Hi All, I was on here some years back when I was having trouble working on a GS850 and haven't been back since. That project didn't go as planned and I had to sell the bike to a motorcycle junk yard. However, I love these motorcycles so, about three years ago, I bought a 1981 GS650G without a title in-hand. The seller stated that it was given to him by his nephew instead of money that he owed.....but was not given the title. Well, I contacted the seller recently and he still does not have information about his nephew. Shorten the story up here and jump straight to the point: is there any way to force the title transfer without going through the courts? The bike isn't worth what that would cost. Have barely ridden it because it cannot be insured without proper title, lien holder information plus I found that the bike doesn't fit me right and isn't enjoyable for me to ride. I am tall and the 650 is built on the smaller frame than what I have previously owned. Would like to sell it as whole because it's still in good condition. If I want to sell it 'for parts only' how do I go about doing that? I appreciate any help.

If you are going to sell it for parts only then just say that in your ad (here, Ebay, or Craigslist) and be willing to tear stuff off for folks as they need.

I personally wonder you would have bought the bike in the first place if it didn't have a title since something sounds really fishy there with this uncle/nephew

Yeah, this situation is what I am now viewing as a life lesson learned the hard way.

Easy... Get a bill of sale, figure out the 6% tax rate of your purchase price or 6% of $525(if you paid less then that, that's how much my GS650 was taxed for this past week) fill out a VT registrationand, cut a check out to VT DMV send it into Montpellier DMV. Get your legal plate and registration then transfer to your state or just run it. I know a couple of guys have done it here. I can grab a VT registration form if needed but you can just print one out online.

Luckily Jedz you live in Vermont and don't have to deal with the people at the local DMV's who stare blankly at you when you try to explain this perfectly legal process to them. Yes, I have done it. Yes it sucks big time and it yes it was a giant pain in the a$$. The experience still pi$$es me off. I suppose if I did a dozen a year not a big deal or lived in a smaller county setting it may have gone better...or maybe not. All in all it saved me about $64 bucks over a typical bonded title in my state, not sure it was worth it.

Is there any way you can contact the nephew yourself? It would be a drag for somebody to report it stolen and then what do you do? Anyway, good luck with the situation.

OP, Obviously you ran the VIN with law enforcement before you had it on the trailer correct? I'm sure it not stolen but I'm equally sure this nephew story is probably just that, a story.

How do you know a parts bike / non-titled bike seller is lying? His mouth is moving. If you don't walk with the title your probably NEVER getting a title or any help with it either.
