Went to a breakfast ride this morning and half way there the bike started sputtering really bad on the low end it was doing some sputtering and popping over 4,000 rpm as well, though nothing like at idle and just off idle.. A quick check of the pipes and the #2 isn't hot. Get back to the shop and pulled #2 plug, it's gas fouled and wet. Checked the other plugs and they are fine. So, something either happened with #2 carb or the spark for it to start that. Did note when I went to pull the #2 plug is was very loose barely even finger tight. maybe it wasn't grounding good. If it were the coil it would have dropped #3 plug as well right, which it didn't, pipe was yikes hot. So, I'm thinking the low end circuit or something got some crap in it.

Oh yeah did check the petcock on the vacuum side to the #2 carb, no gas seeping down the tube, it was dry.

If the plugs wet its getting fuel. I would go with one of the following..loose plugs cap to wire connection, resistor in the cap gone bad ( if so equipped ), or just a out right bad plug.

Hmm, I have the Accel ultra low resistance superpro 9mm RFI suppression plug wires (that's a mouth full huh) on the bike, I checked it and didn't find any of the connector loose. I don't have my meter with me, gonna go home and get it to check the Ohms on the wire itself. Before I put the tank back on, gonna hook up my IV gas tank and use that first. Don't wanna have to keep taking the tank off and on. Gonna put a new plug in as well, got plenty of spares.

Thats a good plan. Even with the plug being loose it seems it should have fired and youd hear that tell tell sound like a real bad exhaust leak but only popping off the top of the head.

Yeah, I was amazed how loose that plug was. That could have been the mild popping huh. That's what made me check the other plugs (which were burning just right, that light to med tan color) and they were all tight. But #2 was all black, wet and loose. We just did a 300 mile ride yesterday and not one problem. This morning sputter sputter pop. First I thought I got some bad gas before we headed home. Talked to the other guys who bought the same grade of gas at the same place, no problems with their bikes. My bike was running like a striped azz ape all day. Lots of power in the mountains for a change lol. I'm sure it's something simple.

Okay update. installed new gapped plug, checked ohms on the plug wires, 1,3,4 are at 5.06 and #2 wire is at 6.8. That shouldn't be a problem. Check #2 plug for spark and has a nice healthy blue intense spark. #2 Cylinder is getting gas, air, spark and compression, though I got it started it still has the same problem sputtering bad. Pulled the new plug and it was covered in gas. Oh and this was with the IV gas bottle and not the tank so that eliminates the petcock. I spin the motor a few times to blow any excess gas out of #2 and tried it again, same thing. Gotta be in the carb now. Kind of wonder if the main jet loosened up on me and dropped out?

Very good possibility. They have fallen off before so theres always that chance. Sounds like for whatever reason that carb has suddenly went very very rich and thus flooding the cylinder.

Yup was afraid of that. I took so much care making sure those carbs were right when I rebuilt them too. Looks like I take the carbs off then. Gonna do it tomorrow, just ain't got the motivation for it tonite. At least the tank is off already:rolleyes: Thanks guys.

Petcock may be going bad. Will fuel foul #2 plug. I could change plugs and get a day or 2 of travel to work before it would foul again. May save you from pulling the carbs.

It's not the petcock. Had an IV gas bottle hooked up and the vacuum line plugged hence eliminated the petcock( you should have seen this earlier in post #6). Still doing it. It is probably either the main jet backed out and dropped into the fuel bowl or the float went bad. Anyways, haven't gotten to check it yet. A bit busy at work Tues, Wed and Thurs. May have to wait until the weekend.

Okay, an update. got the carbs off this morning pulled #2 fuel bowl. No surprises, everything was in its place. So, now what, took off the floats and inspected it very carefully, can't see anything wrong with it, check the fuel needle and it looks fine, even the spring is working inside it. There was not a bit of dirt in the fuel bowl. Oh yeah took the bowls off the other carbs to check them as well, nada thing. Okay then, lets look for a valve hanging, pulled the air box out so I could look down into the intake valves, spun the motor up down up down both are okay as well as the the others. Besides a stuck valve would make a ton more racket then just a sputter. So, I'm thinking the float some how stuck open and flooded the cylinder. I have a spare new float so I'm gonna go ahead and install it and put in a new fuel needle as well and check the pivot on the float rod to make sure it doesn't have a rough spot. Oh yeah check the slides too, they seem to be working just fine, even #2. Has a new spark plug as I had said earlier, plug wires are fine and so is the spark.

Trim the gaskets back on the inboard side of the bowl where the floats would possibly make contact with them. This will at least eliminate the gaskets from hanging up a float.

Also work the floats up and down with the bowls off and watch to see that when the float is hanging fully down, the float needle doesnt drop far enough to jam against the tang...its been known to happen. If it acts like its jamming just a little, bend the stopper tab that hits on the float post. The stop is there to prevent the float from dropping too far and allowing the needle to reach that point of getting jammed.

Okay, checked the float and gasket space, no problem there, lots of room. Checked the tab on the new float and it wasn't even coming into contact with the float post, so adjusted that. Just for chit and giggles I put the old float back on and checked it, it was contacting the post. Then put the new one back on and adjusted the tab where it contacts the post, needle seems to be okay, no hint of jamming. Now going to set the float level and throw every thing back and see what happens.

Thats a good thing!!! I always check this function as its often never thought of and overlooked..until something happens. Longs as you worked it a bunch of times and didnt get any hints of trouble, your good to go. Least now you know "what it cant be" if a problem comes back.

IT"S FIXED!! Guess it was either the float or the needle that got hung. Just started it a few minutes ago and she's a purrring again....good suzie good suzie. Thanks for the help guys. Specially you Chuck. Me happy camper!

Youre very much welcome. Glad to be helpful.

LOL, never guess what happened, was finishing button everything up and went to start her again, started fine, noticed the fuel gauge stopped working...@#$@%Q#$#, geez. Guess the tank connections had been disengaged one too many times and gave up the ghost. So got my strippers out and put new electrical ends on and wadda know, its working again. I'm going home, not gonna touch her for out of fear right now LMAO!
