    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil Change HELP!!!!!!

Arghh. Can't believe I'm asking for help on an oil change.

Ok, I removed the drain plug, then I removed the other drain plug infront of the oil filter. Then there are three screw caps that need to be removed in order to remove the filter cover and get at the filter.

Two of these came off without incident, the third one just keeps turning and turning. It must be stripped, but how the heck do I get it off?

Suggestions would be most welcome.

Here's a suggestion (2 actually)
Try grabbing the nut the a pair of vice grips and pulling on it as you unscrew it. Maybe you can get it to grab.
Or, get the the vice grips and try to crush the nut on the stud. Spray some PB Blaster on it, and hit it, dead on, with a hammer. Then try to unscrew the whole thing.
 
Alex, can you grab the recalcitrant nut with vice grips and pull back while turning?
 
or slide a thin screwdriver under it and push up as you turn. The vice grip and this should do it. if the threds are shot on the stud, you may have to use a die on the stud and get a smaller cap/nut. Maybe you will be lucky and the cap is just buggered up.

Alright, I tried the vice grips and the screwdrive pry, no go. This is the screw cap on the top right of the filter cover, akward positioning etc.

Are there any more tips short of the hammer jobby?

I don't mean for you to beat on the thing until it cries "Mercy". What I was suggesting with the hammer is to break loose any corrosion so it will be easier to turn out once you get the nut clamped on there. :)
 
If you have a dremel tool you can use a cutting disk to split the nut and get it off. After the nut is off you can evaluate the stud. You should have enough space to get a couple of nuts on the stud to try to pull it that way.

Just use the tool to make a cut on opposite side of the cap nut. Don't quite cut through into the threads and then take a pliers or vice grips and twist the nut (like your twisting in through the stud) until it splits.
