DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey everyone, this might sound a wee bit silly but I was wondering if anyone could guide me to help with an oil change on a 78 GS550E. I have changed oil before but never on something that has the oil filter inside. I am new to the concept of doing this myself and the only thing I have ever worked on were vehicles and bikes with external oil filters. Any info would be great! Thanks in advance!

oil change

I just changed my oil today on my 79 GS550. I do it with the engine hot so the oil flows quickly:eek:. The filter is in the center between the front exhaust pipes. There is 3 nuts that hold the cover on. just remove those and the cover should pop off. There is a spring in there that is part of the cover. Just flush it out with brakecleaner and make sure the seal is in place and make sure the gasket is in place, replace the filter and reassemble. No problems. The oil I use is valvoline 20-50 motor cycle oil. :D

I'm lucky - my 1100G has a spin-on oil filter, making changing it a snap.
With new filter, my bike calls for 5.3 qts. of oil - more than a lot of cars I've owned.
I guess that's because it's got a huge oil cooler in front of the motor.

After you've done your oil change, you will see how really easy it is, even with having to remove the 3 acorn nuts.

BassCliff's oil change tutorial didn't mention this, but I always do it....
I take off the cap on the oil filler before (or while) letting the oil drain. I don't know if this helps or not, but I've always done it.
