    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil Cooler?

Was wondering if anyone out there has added an aftermarket Oil Cooler?

Is this worth it? How difficult (and expensive) is this?

Also, has anyone added a temp guage?

I'm on 78 gs750 by the way.

yes Lockhart brand no not expensive


Bike has atemp guage, now it doesn't work since the cooler was plumbed in
 
Hi JM, I added a cooler to my '78 GS1000, would be the same process for a 750. Got a GSXR1000 cooler for $20 on ebay and a lockhart adapter from a mc savage yard. Not that hard to do. I will send you some pics if you like. Ray

I'm not going to do it right now (I have many more issues to deal with first). But eventually when I finish restoring her, it is an upgrade I would like to have.
 
JM, Sorry the adapter doesn't show up well with my camera. Hope you can see enough to get an idea. I mounted my cooler with the inlet and outlet on top, an area of controversy here, but my background in powerplants tells me it is the most effective way to assure the cooler remains full of oil. Ok, oil changes are a bit of a pita. Hope this helps. Ray

so basically you can add a oil cooler and fit it in the oil pressure switch circuit?

you can get one on e-bay that fits in\replaces oil filler cap but they want £25 for it!

Here's how I did mine. Over the top of the engine, down between the carbs to the adapter.





 
I put a oil cooler off a Buell on my 1100. It mounts off to the side of the engine so that air is not blocked from flowing over the head, the most critical air path. The hard part was matching the fittings.

so where is the best place to mount a radiator?

just in front of the pipes?

Oh, I see what you are saying now. Usually a radiator refers to the "water" cooler on water cooled engines and oil coolers are refered to as just that - an oil cooler. Many bikes have both.

I elected to mount the oil cooler to the side of the engine so that no part of the engine sees "pre-heated" air from the oil cooler. It could be argued that because of the relative temperature difference and the volumn of air passing through that it would make little difference.

Mounting just in front of the pipes is an option if you have clearance from the front wheel and a screen to protect the cooler from road debris. The mounting brackets might be a challange to build.

Actually, you can mount it anywhere except behind the cylinders. It would be a cool custom set up to mount it in the tail section with a small cooling fan...
