I'm in the process of my first oil change on my GS. Two of the three acorn nuts that hold the oil filter cover have come off fine, but the third is just spinning in place after loosening it.

I searched the forum and found that the studs are a common problem. Any advise on how to get this acorn nut off so i can replace the stud?

Thanks!

Grab it with pliers or vice-grips and pull as you unthread. Then replace the stud....painind'arse, but must be done.

I have a similar problem as the threads on my studs are worn.
How do you remove the studs from the engine?

I tried pulling the bolt off with some pliers with no luck, so I left the old oil filter installed for now and reattached the two other bolts. There's no leaking oil, which is amazing. I went the the LBS and ordered a couple studs.

The old oil was really grimy, so I'm glad I at least changed that. I'll let you know how I fair after the studs come in.

The studs on my 1982 GS750E had a spot without threads right in the middle of it. I clamped a vice grip on it and turned it out without much trouble.

Before you remove the stud, take one of the nuts off a good stud and see if it will twist on the problem stud. It may just be the nut has bad threads. If not, the method I recommended should have good effect.

BTW, the local Suzuki dealer had the studs in stock and new nuts for cheap.

New Split washers would help a lot.
I think these strip because folks overcompensate for their frugality in buying needed parts.

This is a really bad idea. You need to replace the stud before attempting to ride the bike or your bike can puke out it's oil and land you on your head when it slicks down your tires.

Replacing the stud is not that hard. As already stated, pull on the nut while unthreading and if that doesn't work, cut off the stud with a hack saw blade. A regular bolt will work fine until your new studs and nuts come in. I strongly suggest replacing them all.
