A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Oil Filter Cover

Drenski

Forum Newbie
Hi there. Newbie here. Thanks in advance for the help I'm about to receive.

I have a 1980GS250T I'm trying to resurrect. A friend of mine gave it to me stating it would cost more to fix it than it's worth. Sounded like the perfect tinker toy to me.

The stator was toast and so it has been replaced and the side cover reinstalled with new gasket. I was about to pour the new oil in when I noticed a round..... not sure how to describe it. It's a round section on the outside of the cover that matches up with a round section on the inside of the cover. It almost looks like it was designed as a "knock out" to then cut some threads and add a cooler or something. I'm assuming you all know what I'm talking about. Am I suppose to install the cover in a certain way?

Also, I just noticed this. The wires on the new stator are all yellow however the wires on the old stator are white/green, white/blue and yellow. Can someone tell me which wires connect to which? Also attached is a pic of the old stator.

Thanks in advance. Eric

In both cases, it doesn't matter.

Seriously.

The oil filter cover can be "clocked" any old way and it's fine. I don't know if anyone knows why that round whatsit is part of the cover casting.

As to the stator, that also does not matter. The yellow "output" wires from the stator can be connected in any order to the "input" wires in the harness.

That said, please read The Stator Papers, (re-read until understanding begins to dawn) and carefully inspect for and address the other deficiencies and burned wires and connectors you'll almost certainly find in the wiring harness. The bullet connectors on the stator wires are a bad design and WILL fail; replace with spade terminals, or solder and heat shrink the wires directly. Most of us replace the regulator/rectifier as well with an SH775.
