A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Can anyone tell me what kind of oil filter my 1979 GS850G has? I cant find a refrence anywere. My repair manual says nothing about it and I called Suzuki and they just gave me the run around from sale to service to parts and voice mail. I am sure the filter might say right on it but I am a firm believer to get your parts before you start wrenching. Thanks in advance.

I also own a 79 gs850, I get my filters for less than $5 a piece from my local bike shop, they are pretty generic and most places should carry them, I think the filters work for most suzuki bikes in a 10-15 year range if memory serves.

These are widely available at auto parts stores and come with the o-ring.

Emgo and OEM filters do not come with the o-ring, which is asinine. You should ALWAYS replace the o-ring with the filter. You can sometimes get away with re-using the old one, but don't count on it. There's a local shop that sells Emgo filters, but the unknown brand of o-rings they sell me don't fit. They look correct, but are about 10% too small, and there's no way to stretch them into place.

Any non-Hardley-Ableson motorcycle shop should have this filter in stock -- the same filter is used in all Suzuki GS models.

If you see a rack of filters, odds are excellent that the GS filter is the one with the lowest part number. Open it up and look at the o-ring -- if it is the unique 3-lobed shape, it is the correct filter.

Be very, very gentle with the nuts holding the oil filter cover onto the studs. These threads are made of a low-grade cheddar, and strip at the slightest provocation.

Hey thanks a million. One of my local auto parts stores has it for $5.19 I will be carfull with the filter cover studs thankjs for the heads up "I am famouse for crossthreading and striping this so I needed that advice thanks.

Put two or three drops of superglue behind the o-ring to stop it falling out/getting snagged as you replace the cover. And it's true that if you as much as sneeze at the studs, you'll strip them.

Vasoline petroleum jelly works well for holding o-rings in place as well. As does ordinary GP grease.

Or let the o-ring warm in the sun or warm spot.....a little dab of oil on the finger and run it around the o-ring while it's in place..usually sticks.

JC Whitney has it...

JC Whitney has it...

I just ordered one for $2.99 from them...it's an EMGO
your part # for ordering is AGM012739P

On the box it has these numbers 10-29800 O/F SUZ 16500-45810

JC Whitney actually has most of the parts for our bikes at decent prices...

If you go to fram's webpage @ fram.com, under vehicle applications, they have a PDF of every motorcycle application available from them

it's what I use @ work :)

I use blue hylomar to hold gaskets in place it also serves as a belt and brace sealent great stuff, but use spareling

LOL:) You guys are stating to worry me about these studs. My nich name is captain strip LOL:) I use Fram tough gard filters on all my cars but in this case i think the cross refrenced filter at the local parts house in my best bet.
