    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

oil filter studs

Just wanting to get suggestions on what to do. 1985 gs 700 that I just got and am starting to restore. Changed oil and filter and found one stud stripped completely. The other two are ok and will be able to be cleaned up with a die, they still tighten down with only one spot of messed up threads. My question is do I need to remove and replace the damaged stud or can I cut new smaller threads on that stud, maybe m5 or m4 and have luck with a new nut holding properly.
 
Just change the studs It's not hard. Just use some vise grips, install the new stud with some thread locker
 
replace the studs and keep an extra set of studs and nuts on-hand - as you never know when you find a stripped one when replacing the filter. I had my butt saved this last weekend when I changed the oil and found a stripped stud - fortunately I had 1 set (stud/nut) left from the last time I had ordered spares.

I will add that you should use the Suzuki filter o-rings rather than those you get with the filter, IF the filter comes with one......................the aftermarket ones are often harder and thicker, which strains those studs/nuts and causes the problem.

I think what causes the problem is the same thing that causes problems all over the bike.....they're overtightened!
 
That's just it chucky.....................if the o-ring doesn't compress easily enough, then overtightening happens almost automatically. You finger tighten it and as soon as you hit it with a socket - it's stripped. Been there and done that with the non-factory o-rings. I make it a habit to only used 2 fingers on the rachet when tightening the stud nuts to keep from overtightening them, but even that has failed with hard o-rings.

I guess I've never used the "O" rings that come with some filters. I usually just use the same one over and over.

Saves loads of cash using the same gasket, till you strip the threads or the so and so won't seal.

That's the point I've come to - I have 3 or 4 factory o-rings that I rotate between with each change and that works well. Just the previous oil change I just HAD to try the o-ring that came with the K&N filter - bad move. Once I took it off I could tell I had a stud in trouble, just didn't feel right as the nut loosened. I looked at the old seal and you could tell it was too big for the groove as it had compressed itself out of the groove in spots and was flat and squashed where it forced itself under the flat parts of the cover.........................it's amazing that it didn't leak.
 
It ain't the o-rings -- those studs are made of compressed sawdust and cheddar cheese, and they wear out and strip very quickly no matter what you do. This happens to every GS.

Most real hardware stores (NOT the "big box" home stores) and real auto parts stores (NOT the discount joints) will have 6mm studs made from tougher stuff. You can also order studs from McMaster-Carr. http://mcmaster.com

I don't see the point of waiting a week for OEM parts, which will just be the same low-quality cheese.
 
Never stripped one in over 28 years. Had a few come out with the nut before.

Can you please provide the dimensions for the stud. I know it's 6 mm, but what length? I've heard 20 mm on this board, but the Suzuki dealer said 1 1/4" (31.75 mm). What about thread pitch? I was able to get a standard nut on the stripped thread to tighten it enough to keep riding, but I want to fix it properly at the next oil change. Thanks!!

You can remove one of your good ones for comparison, bring it along to the above mentioned decent hardware store, OR just go order some at the dealer...they'll be in well in time for your next change!
 
Never been sure which models have the studs. Mine has bolts (which are now SS allen head)

The problem with that suggestion is I would have to down the bike to make the repair... and there aren't enough nice days in Illinois to waste even 1. My plan is to replace the studs at the next oil change, but I want to have the parts on hand just in case the filter cover starts leaking.

I understand that and I'm with you (my bike is down now!) which is why I said:

They have the part numbers. They do not need a sample stud to order one, or several. You could probably even call it in with a CC# to save you a trip!
 
how much torque when installing Stud Bolts?

How stiff should it be screwing the stud bolts in? :-k I have tried them using just fingers and it doesn't go in very far when the bolt gets very tight.
Any ideas I really donlt want to end up cross threaded or stripping the hole.

Also a question was asked about a screw on filter for these bikes. I'm gonna guess that no one has built such a contraption.
