Bike, car or truck?

Manufacturer?

Year?

Come on, we're good, but not clairvoyant (yet).

GS(X)1100EX looking at you profile.

Would have thought its the standard gasket for the oil filter cover.

Where have they taken the oil cooler feed lines from and what makes you suspect that its not a standard gasket to make you ask this question? A few pictures may help other looking at this thread if there's a problem.

If you're in the US of A, Napa auto parts sells a good filter with an o-ring -- if they don't have it at your local store, they'll get it the next day.

Yup, those 80-81 1100E's have a different o-ring configuration...

Fram sells a filter that comes with that "different" o-ring - I get mine at Advance Auto, but they usually have to order it. However, the standard filter they have on the shelf for the "regular" o-ring style is the same filter you'll get if you order the one made for your bike. The only difference is the o-ring.

Recently I just bought a couple OEM filter o-rings (much better quality), but still use the $5 fram filter.

You can re-use those o-rings a number of times, but it's best to have a new one on-hand in case you need it.

IIRC the K&N filters come with both gaskets.
What you have is a stock cover with an aftermarket oil cooler. I have seen it done this way before; it works, but makes changing the oil a pain. But the cover is stock, so the stock 80-81 gasket should fit fine.

alright thanks guys im gonna order some of the k&N filters. this forum is very helpful thank you everyone for helping with all my gs needs

The Wix filters (available at NAPA) are pretty well made and come with the o-ring too....probably more reasonably priced than K&N. As others have said, you can re-use the o-ring a number of times (for years, actually), so OEM filters are fine, once you have a couple o-rings for standby. Probably worth mentioning that those little acorn nuts do not require a lot of torque to seal...finger tight + 1/2 turn should be fine.;)
