oil leak

Bike developed a leak, after I checked valves clearences;
It squirts oil from this area:

What could be the problem? It never leaked oil, from there or elsewere.
Thanks

Most likely the oil is just running down from the valve cover gasket.

Degrease the engine really well, let it dry, then start it up while watching for the source of the leak. Some people like to spray foot powder or similar on the leak area since it helps show the source of the leak quite dramatically. Key thing is to clean the engine first and then watch closely on the next startup.

OK, I have drained the old(ish) oil and will put new one in;
I am almost shure it's not seeping trough two poor mated surfaces (valve cover), rather then is finding it's way out of the engine with a bit of pressurization, cause it makes a pool in no time.
Thanks

Did you put on a new valve cover gasket and clean all the old gasket pieces off the surfaces of cylinder head and valve cover?

You might also want to check the area where the tachometer cable connects. Very common to have an oil leak in that area. Oil tends to migrate down from where it's actually leaking. Do as suggested and clean the area very well. Put some baby powder or spray foot powder all over the area suspected and above. Look for the FIRST sign of oil. That's where the oil is leaking.

Had my volume up to high for that.
Glad my neighbors are awake and mowing there lawns:)

Wow...that's what you call a major oil leak for sure. Now what could have happened while doing a simple valve shim job to cause that???? I really can't begin to guess, not with that type of oil loss..

At least I know valves are in spec. and an exhaust clamp thread has been "helycoiled"... but keep coming with suggestions.
Thanks

It wasn't me who helicoiled the clamp, in actual fact I would never helicoil something which is likely to be removed often; and by the way is the #2 exhaust, on the right of where the leak seems to be coming from.
As anybody gor a pic of the inside of the area interested, without cammes and chain?
Thanks

its not rocket scientist work to realize rocker cover gasket is leaking into centre of the head then oil flows out the air passage at the front
simple cure replace rocker gasket

There's an air passage there?

ozman, thx for the reply; so it's not leaking between cylinder head and cylinder block?

correct there is.... it allows air to flow through the head past the spark plug area and centre of cylinder head,airflow exits in front of carbs but any oil leaking front rocker cover in the centre will exit at the front because its downhill !

what this air passage is meant to do?

the fin the oil is running off is above the line where head joins cylinder
refer to my previous reply as to why air passage is there

He means that between the cylinders the there is a space for air to flow thru the engine and around the cylinders for cooling them down. And he is right..new cam cover gasket is in order. When removing the parts of the old gasket thats stuck to the head and cover..dont scar it up.

hi chuck
both the cylinders and cylinder head have air passages through them to assist cooling in this case the oil appears to be exiting from cylinder head air passage

Pull the gas tank and inspect the top of the engine. You're bound to see where the oil is leaking from and how it's getting to the front of the engine. My guess is you'll see a pool of oil around a spark plug as well.
