    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil leaks @ head gasket & cyl base

'85 GS 850.
Just replaced the cam cover gasket and this fixed a major leak but have now discovered the leaks on the front of the engine- weeping out of the HG and Cyl base gaskets. Have searched for a cure. Any luck with retorquing the cylinder bolts? Any additives to help seal the leaks in the gaskets. Really do not want to pull the engine to replace those gaskets. Any advixe appreciated.
 
I have a '79 850 that has started to leak oil from the head gasket joint. It has become bad enough to leave a oil trail on both sides of the engine after a 2 hour ride. Yesterday it left a small oil spot on my driveway. I am ordering gaskets this week.

Mine on has about 1000 miles on since I put it back on the road.

Did you recently revive yours as well?

I tried retorguing the head because it couldn't hurt, but it didn't help either.
According to my Clymer's manual, The head and then the cylinders can be removed while in the frame.

No revival- purchased as a rider a couple of years ago and is in nice shape other than the annoying leaks. Will check the shop manual for repair procedure. Really do not want to tear it that far down as base gasket is also leaking. Just the head, not that big a deal.
 
You should be able to tear it down and put it all back together in a few hours. Just be careful getting the pistons back in the bores. Don't fold a ring.
 
Make sure the cam chain tensioner is not leaking, it can leak thru the front of the motor
