    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oiling the head...

I have a question Im sure one of you smart guys can answer.

I just got my GS running after its been sitting for many, many years, let it run for about a minute and now changing the oil.

My question is, can I check for oil pressure to the head by lossening the rocker arm bolts that come out of the head? Or is there a safer more surefire way to check top end oiling without removing the head cover?

Pull the valve cover and see if there's fresh oil up there. You need to set the valves anyway.

I was hoping to put that off till i get everything else gone over...

Just wanted to pour in some fresh oil and iron out some electrical tests and make sure thats all working good. As well as running it up and down the gears making sure the tranny is not making goofy noises. Just would like to know there is oil making it to top as I let it run while checking other stuff.

And when that all checks out and seem road worthy to me, I will do the valves at that time. Just in the meantime without poping the cover is there a way to check top end oiling?
 
Not sure if there is a shortcut like you are asking for, but running up and down through the gears won't matter at all if the engine isn't running right.
For that to happen, you need properly-set valves and clean carbs. :o
And, as reddirtrider mentioned, while you have the valve cover off to set the valves, you can see the oil flow while cranking the engine.

Agree with the others; do the valves now. Full carb tear rebuild along with a valve adjustment are the first two steps to any restoration project.
