Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

One pipe doesn't have any color

My 3rd exhaust pipe from the left doesn't have any color to it while the other 3 have that bluish/orange color. It idles fine around 1500. When I took my pods off and was just blipping, tiny mists of gas was coming from the carbs. When just rolling on the throttle, it doesn't do that. Is that normal? The diaphragms do not have any pin holes in them. I have completely taken the carbs apart 5 times and cleaned every jet/carb body in the past 5 months. I haven't done a valve check because I do not have a feeler guage and don't remember how to do that process when I replaced all the gaskets while I put new piston rings in back in March of this year. New pipes installed in March. Still no color on that third pipe.

is the 3rd pipe getting hot compared to the others? if you have gone through the carbs it may be an ignition problem

In my opinion, no color is a good thing. The pipes turn colors because they get too hot, especially if they are stock pipes. Stock pipes are double-walled, so they resist color change more than after-market pipes.

You say you had enough money to replace the pipe and the rings, but didn't have another $5 for feeler gauges? I would pass on a helping of whatever luxury you enjoy to get the necessary tools to do a job as important as that.

By the way, removing the pods and watching the mist really doesn't do much for diagnosis. The carbs depend on the restriction of an air filter to work properly, so you are only watching them behave badly, even if they are in perfect condition.

I'm confused Steve...how do you really feel about the situation? :p

Ditto on setting the valves and making sure everything is running perfect.

Or throw shiny things at it and hope NOT to burn a valve or hole a piston...  :D

Would #3 happen to be the carb the vacuum line for the petcock connects to? If so the petcock may have a holed diaphram allowing extra fuel into that cylinder causing it to run cooler.

Since my mechanic had the feeler guages, I just didn't bother to buy some. I don't know if that pipe is getting hotter than the rest.

Sorry, I know I tend to be ambiguous at times, but ...
well, I tend to call it as I see it. Sometimes certain 'facts' might be assumed or implied, but based on what was presented in the original statement, "I haven't done a valve check because I do not have a feeler guage", it's easy to do that.

#3 is the 'vacuum carb' for VM carbs ('79 and older), but it's #2 for the BS carbs ('80 and newer). His sig line says he has an '82.

It idles fine around 1500.
Does it idle lower than that? Suggested idle speed for most of our bikes is 1050 +/- 50 rpm.

I know Steve. I think I have been putting that off since I don't have a feeler guage. But nevertheless is something that I should do. Would I have to buy a new valve cover gasket? March of this year was when I put new vesrah gaskets on my bike. No, unfortuneately it does not idle below 1500. I did clean the K&N pods before it really idled bad. That seemed to make it idle better, but still is unsteady below 1500. My diaphragms do not have any pin holes, but on the top around the edges there is a very tiny bit frayed. Since the top of the carb sort of clamps that down by the 4 screws, wouldn't that be enough to still hold that vacuum type seal? Or am I looking at a fleabay special of a rack of carbs for 4 diaphragms? Again sort of putting that off too because of the price and haven't really found a set of carbs to purchase 4 diaphragms. Mixture screws are set at 3.5 turns.
