DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

This is an easy one for you guys. The bike(80 GS1100E) has been sitting in shop for about 7 years. It will fire and run with choke about half pulled but when you give it any throttle it dies out. The prime on the petcock does not work. How do I figure out if this thing is getting enough gas through petcock, or if I have carb problems. Have not pulled and cleaned them yet, but plan to.

Thanks

JB

With the petcock set to run, disconnect the fuel line from the petcock and install a fuel line from the petcock into a handy container. Disconnect the vacuum line from the carb fitting and suck on the vacuum line. Fuel should flow in a full, steady stream into the container as long as you're sucking on the vacuum line if the petcock is functioning properly.

sounds like you need to clean your pilots. the gs' choke isnt actually a choke, more on an enrichener, and it only works when the throttle plates are closed. thats why it is dying when you give it throttle, its not getting gas from anywhere but the choke circuit.

Thanks for the starting point fellas. Had planned to take the carbs down and clean them, just did not know where to start as far as what to look for in them for this problem. Thanks again for the advice.

As was mentioned...you must clean the carbs, first and foremost. These CV carbs are VERY lean from the factory and do not take well to sitting. Every passage (see the Carb Cleaning) tutorail, needs to be cleared. Also, make sure the air filter is in and oiled, airbox is tightly sealed, and all clamps on the intakee side of the engine are tight! Good luck.

Thanks guys, plan to start the carb clean this weekend. As mentioned before, the bike has K&N pods, supertrapp 4 into1, and as far as I know stock other than that. When I am in the carbs how can I tell if the jets are stock or if a dynojet kit might have been added with pipe and pods. I remember bike was pretty flat on bottom and screamed on top. My stepfather handed this bike down to me about 10 years ago. At the time I was racing motocross, now young kids and so on, but it is time to do this bike some justice and get her back to where she belongs. Not to mention I am craving to ride.
Thanks

A stage #3 kit (if not already done) should fix the obvious problems.
