Opinion: K & N or UNI Air filter for 850G

My filter has had it in my 850L project bike. Either one of these better than the other? KN is about $40 and UNI is about $20. Opinions anyone?

UNI on the stock cage. K&N's flow more air than stock because they don't filter the air as well and more dirt gets though to the engine.

The K&N will last forever.
But the K&N as stated above flow more air.
And as stated above will allow more debris into combustion area.
You need to oil the K&N filter. (easy)
Even then it may run a tad lean and carb adjustment may be needed. (air fuel easy)
I bought my K&N filters because they last forever.
Cheaper in the long run.
If you go with the K&N and your idle hangs spray a bit more oil.

There is an added bonus if you choose to use the UNI filter.
In a couple of year when it starts deteriorating and letting in tons of dirt and plastic, your engine can eat those pieces and melt those plastic bits onto your valves and piston crowns. ;)
Get the K & N.

I have stock style K&N's that fit in the factory airbox on my GS850 and GS1100GK. Both are running the factory jetting and perform great. I clean and oil them every spring when I change the secondary and rear differential lube.

What on earth did you do to your Uni filter?

I've got two Uni filters (I pop one in, then clean and re-oil the other and put it in a Ziploc bag for the next time). One is at least 12 years old, and it's fine. The Uni filters also "last forever" WITH PROPER CARE, so there's no cost benefit to the K&N.

As with any foam filter, if you clean it with certain solvents, you're gonna have a bad time.

As for the central question, I prefer the Uni filters since they are pretty much the same thing as the stock filter, and oiled foam filters better than just about anything else.

However, if you're missing the stock filter cage, the K&N is a decent alternative. They CAN filter quite well IF you clean and re-oil the filter strictly according to the instructions each time, and use ONLY K&N cleaner and oil.

Or, if you don't want to decide, just buy a stock foam filter element. They're still available and undeniably 100% correct.

I've been running a stock style K&N in my bike since 1981. It gets cleaned once a year. I have had no problems with it. I installed it before I got my pipes, didn't have to do any adjustments to the carbs at that time. One I got my RC pipe on, then I had to up the main jets to compensate for the leanness then. And I live in a very dry and dusty area.

This is the way I went, ordered today. At $16.59 shipped price seemed reasonable and it's close by ( Indiana) so I'll have quick. Just in time for the temps to drop back into the 40s:(

Here is where I got it http://www.ebay.com/itm/321329150966

The top seal for the air filter cage to top of airbox was gone so cleaned it up and applied new weather stripping for a good seal

The current issue of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, (technically last months now) has an interesting article on filter choices, a little disappointing in the sense it doesn't discuss foam filters , but still 'revealing'. P 76.
