painting with single stage

Ok, so I have gathered all I need to finish up my bike this spring. (thread in "Other Projects" to come) I will be respraying with an automotive single stage Pearl Acrylic Enamel. I will then be applying stock like decals, and finishing it off with Spraymax 2K clear.

The question of the day is... Has anybody here used any of the modern single stage paints? Pro's, Con's? Anything different as far as application compared to conventional basecoat clearcoat paints?

Any input is of course appreciated.

I just did one... used the duplicolor stuff available everywhere and then the spraymax over the top. It'll probably take more cans than you think. I've got a thread somewhere...

If it's all the bike bits I'd allow at least 4 cans of spraymax. You're going to need a coat or two underneath the decals and some more on top.... It takes quite a bit to bury the decals.. :)

The single stage isn't a rattle can. It's a 2 part acrylic enamel, that you don't need to clear coat over. It's an 8:1 mix ratio, plus I will be adding one part medium reducer. I am only clear coating it, because I am adding decals. I still may be going with a real acrylic clear coat, and just save the Spraymax 2K I have for another project, but haven't decided yet.

Unless you already have the acrylic enamel paint it doesn't make sense to approach your project that way. Clear can be applied over a single stage but that's not how the paint system is designed. You would be better off with a base coat and urethane clear as long as you are using a proper spray gun. Oh, and pearl's are often a two stage base too, although some formulas mix them straight into the regular base.

I do already have the paint, and it is a single stage pearl. It was the color I was looking for without going custom. Did the research regarding clearing over it before buying. I have a professional gun and have used it many times. I just haven’t used a single stage paint before and was looking for some real feedback from someone who has. Have watched a handful of YouTube on it, but trust you guys over YouTube for real experience.

Sorry to chime in... I thought by single stage you meant the laquer based stuff I used! From what I know, don't get laquer anywhere near that enamel otherwise they wrinkle & crack.
Other than that I don't know anything about the system you're using... I think it's called Coach enamel in england perhaps. Some guys applying it (or Rustoleum which is similar) with a roller or brush heavily thinned on cars. :)

Good luck with the project!

LOL, well I don’t think I will be going with the roller or brush technique for this one. I painted my 750T the same way you painted yours. It turned out great. 10 years later and it still shines like new. That was the original plan for this bike, but I couldn’t find the exact color I was hunting for. I will be starting a build thread, and if I have my way, a YouTube series on it once I get started. Shooting for next weekend to start prepping all of the plastic, and minor bodywork on the tank. The color is still a surprise yet. But it should look amazing (as long as I don’t frack it up too bad, lol).

thanks for taking interest.

I agree with Ed. Not sure how the acrylic enamel will work with the 2K clear. You have a bit of time (24 hours I believe) once you crack one of those cans open. I would advise doing a spray out test on a old part or something. Spray the pearl and follow it up with the clear all in one session and see how it reacts before you do your real parts. Single stage acrylic enamel isn't really designed to have a clear coat over it, let alone a urethane product like the 2K. You would also want to sand the acrylic enamel (which might disturb the pearl) before putting decals on..so it would be nice to know if the acrylic enamel will accept having clear sprayed onto it so you can sand it before decals and further clear coats to protect the decals.

Seems like a good piece of advice. I suppose I have something around here I could do a test run on. I am still considering leaving the decals off of it. So while I am shooting color, I can hit my test piece at the same time. Then come back and sand a bit and clear just the test piece. Then decide if I want to continue with the whole plan, or just leave it the way it is.
