Penetrating Oils Compared

Machinist's Workshop magazine actually tested penetrants for break
out torque on rusted nuts. Significant results! They arranged a subjective
test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque
required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ..................... 516 pounds

WD-40 .................. 238 pounds

PB Blaster ..............214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix... 53 pounds

ATF is found in any auto section and acetone is cheap at tractor supply

I'm in the middle of an exhaust job and this info around penetrating oils is great.Is the ratio 50/50 for the acetone/ATF mix? cheers Paul

That info is all well and good provided you can get the oil to the heart of the corrossion. In many circumstances (like GS semi-inverted rusted/siezed exhaust bolts ) You need a aerosol spray oil to get to the root of the bolt/stud. I swear by PB, and the ATF/Acetone trick sounds cool, i'll have to give it a try!

It's 50/50, you could try a spray bottle but the acetone would probably melt it.
