A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I've used this stuff on several motorcycle engine and top-end builds with no clutch issues at all.

I like it because it's thick and sticky, and the bright red color makes it easy to see if you've completely covered the parts. If it takes a few weeks before you're done, it's not going to run off the parts.

I don't believe it's moly-based -- it's a reddish, translucent fluid with no particles (no need to shake). Moly particles generally make fluids black and opaque, and require shaking (or a thick, pasty texture) to ensure the moly is evenly mixed.

That said, I'm sure it contains friction modifiers of some sort that could be a problem for wet clutches. But you need to use so little, it doesn't actually make any difference. You might use something like 1/8 ounce per engine if you're being overly generous.

Thanks for the info. As you can see from the photos I used it. Did not need much. Will be breaking out the bottle again shortly when I install the cams.

Awesome job cleaning er up! That is not a quick or painless process.

Thanks! Cleaning, prepping, and masking seem to be the most drawn out process of this project. I have been masking off the head for way too long!! Will post pics when I have it painted.

When I first got my bike I took it down to my buddy's place because he has a HUGE shop....and he used to be a bike mechanic. His house is 1.5 hours away. Anyway the plan is to get the motor buttoned up and down to his place by the weekend after this one. Sadly the Chrome battery I ordered yesterday showed up damaged. I have an email into them and am hoping for the best as I have not heard great stories about them. Need to get all my poop in a group before I make the trip to get this beast running again.

Here is what I did last night.....

As I finished my other post I got a response from Chome Battery! It took them less than 12 hours (overnight) to let me know that they were sorry for the damaged product and they would send me a new battery today! Nice!!!

Thanks! I did not intially intend for the orginal post to turn into a project!! :D Hope to slap a few more photos on and be done....

Engine is in! 22 hour wrench-a-thon this weekend. Fork seals were first. Then all the fun stuff to prepare for engine install. Engine slid in with 3 people working on it. Brake fluid changed, chain lubed, safety stuff done. Got some bugs to work out and get her dialed in, but all the hard stuff is done!! And I love her!!! First ride since I bought the bike and I am speechless with the power it has! :)

After working out a few bugs and syncing the carbs my battery was not charging. Pulled and tested r/r and ended up ordering and installing and SH775(Polaris model). Stator tested good. :) All is working great now and if the weather is good I plan to take an early morning ride tomorrow.

What is meant by "stator tested good" If your stator has dropped any from the specs, could be a sign its on its way out. When I installed my compufire, I went with a new stator anyways even though mine was testing good as well.

Oh, by the way, you have done an excellent job restoring your bike. Very nice indeed.

I went through the stator papers with a fine toothed comb and have read all I can regarding these issues....all tests were good as far as the stator is concerned. AC on all three legs were 78V at 5000pm. Resistance was .7 ohms. The tests on the r/r showed it was defective per test C on the papers. With the new r/r I am getting 14.8V at 5000 rpm.

When I got the bike it had a spun rod bearing....7000 miles on the odometer. The PO had already starting parting it out. The bike was missing 2 key items that I am sure he sold right before I got there.....the cdi and the r/r. Before I knew anything about GS's I purchased both of the missing items (used) from ebay. My guess is that the r/r was already toast when I got it.

I cleaned all the connections and went with a common ground to the frame per the advice from many posts on here.

Thanks Ed! I like to include photos. I read so many posts on here and am always curious of what the poster's "project" looks like. :)

That is a very nice TZ, you did great work on it.

It's a very under rated model both in terms of style and power.

Went for my first ride today...27 miles around a lake near my house.
