    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Petcock Filter

So how important is that 4'' orange filter thing? Mine was all sorts of funky and I took it off and out an inline fuel filter. Am I ok? or is it used for flow or anything in particular?
 
Its the mfirst line defense for keepind crap out of the petcock..let alone the rest of the system. I would soak the old one in some simple green for a hr or so and rinse. Repeat till the filter is as clean as you can get it and put it back.
 
It is also the part that gives you a "Reserve" fuel supply in the tank.

Without that filter, you will need to make sure your riding shoes are also comfortable walking shoes. :-\\\

Also, the type of inline filter you install will make a difference. If you got it at the auto parts store, good luck.
You need a filter that is designed for a gravity-fed fuel system, so get a filter made for a lawn tractor.

The crap that was on the old one isnt coming off.. I did try to clean it. I ended up cleaning the petcock and put a cone in line filter. the biggest thing I am worried about is flow or pressure or anything like that.

How is that? When you turn the needle you can watch the ball valve move to different locations.

The fuel pickup tubes (RES vs ON) inside the filters are at different heights, By removing the filter you are not changing the fuel level at which gasoline will enter the petcock. By turning the petcock handle, you are just opening a channel in the petcock under those pickup tubes.

I don't have a picture handy...
 
Those "different locations" are the inputs to the petcock. The "filter thing" is actually two tubes of different heights that determines the source for the fuel.

The "main" part of the input that feeds the "RUN" part of the petcock feeds from the upper tube, which leaves about 3" of fuel in the bottom of the tank.
When you move the petcock to "REServe" or "PRIme", it draws from the lower input at the bottom of the tank.

so what your saying is that I will be drawing fuel from the bottom at all times..

Here is my main concern, Am I going to destroy anything with out it?
 
Well,

you MIGHT not destroy anything, but if you have ANY crapola in your tank (e.g. rust) it will definitely make it's way into your petcock, and will eventually cause it to seize. One of the other things about the filter is that it shifts the draw off point higher in the tank, so heavier material (and water) settles out below the pickup tubes, greatly minimizing the amount of material that can flow into the petcock.

You really do want to have the filter in place.
 
Just place an add in the PARTS WANTED SECTION and someone will have an old junk petcock layingb around that they can strip the periscope oput of for you.

Its not rocket science or an unobtainable part. Bet a fast Ebay search will bring up many of them.
 
Please get a new filter or clean yours. 24hrs in simple green or purple power WILL clean it.

Yes it will clean it..may not be pearly like new white, but the micro holes will be clean and the filter will again aloow FILTERTED fuel to flow freely.

Yes.

Your carbs will clog with debree from the tank or the fuel out of the gas pump. If they don't flood out from debree stuck in the needle and seat, the jets will eventually clog and run lean enough to do damage.

Needle clogged shortly after i started the bike for the first time cause of this an inline gravity filter has prevented recurrance.

Usually a second filter causes problems.

I've found with mine Its use one filter in the tank or one outside but not both.

Its a pain when the needles clog up.
 
I've got an old petcock in the garage you can have the tube off of. The valve portion is bent and leaking, but the filter and tube are fine. Shoot a PM if you want it.

Running fine for me so far both petcock and the gravity filter are New tho . But TBH thats only a temp solution. I need to clean and coat my tank thats the real solution.
