Hey guys, new to GS's and the site, excellent resource by the way, I've spent quite a bit of time reading/ learning about these bikes.

My petcock leaks, I've looked on bikebandit and they want $277 bucks for one (not likely) and rebuild kits are 36 on EBAY. Some guys have said no to rebuild kits, but I've had no issues in the past on old yamaha xselevens, or v65's, etc.

What other model years of petcock will fit my 79 gs1000 (I believe it's an 'E' model, it's got a stepped seat and dual front disc brakes).

And if I missed a thread that already covers this, I do apologize in advance.

Cheers and thanks

I've swapped ones from a 78' 1000 to a 79' with no issues. There's probably a number of petcocks that will work though. Z1 sells one that works but the fuel line is pointing the opposite way so you have to extend the fuel line a lot more. I actually found a petcock on ebay for $99 that looks OEM and is new, I'll see if I can find the link.

Thank you for the reply, much appreciated, I hope you're able to find the link!
Cheers

Thanks for posting the link, I looked at it, but it didn't specify being compatible with my 79 1000, it showed specific models only, none of which were mine. If it doesn't matter then I'll go for it.
I pulled my tank today and pulled the petcock, the bolt hole centres are 45mm apart, if that helps at all?
I wouldn't mind finding one with a proper 'off' position as well.
Thanks again

"PINGEL," I've seen this word before, please, do tell ! Where may I find one, what mods may or may not be involved ? I've taken my pics for collector plates and submitted them last week, usually takes 3-4 weeks, would love to have her up and running when my plates arrive !
Cheers !

Recently been reading how the fuel petcock vacuum has many issues. after measuring my fuel petcock hole spacing found it to be 44MM 79 gs1000E found a petcock adapter plate 1702C for use with a 3/8" petcock ordered the parts waiting for them to arrive this way I can eliminate the vacuum petcock and replace with a manual one with off, Res, main controls. Decided to clean the carbs removed the air box and installed 4 separate air filters. The carbs needed cleaning no surprise the o-rings are shot ordered the o-ring kit

Few hope full simple questions
? Do you use a sealer on the jets or just hand tight as there was some white powder paper on the threads seems odd to me. What do you do with the vacuum port tube (petcock) do you just plug it? And What about the breather and vent lines what if anything to do?

the Pingel is avalible on ebay pn 1702C

No you don't use sealer on the jets that is corrosion you are seeing on the jets that is why you need to dip the carbs when you clean them. If you just try and spray the insides they wont be clean. As far as going to pods[ individual filters ] plan on having to rejet the carbs.

Humm almost looked like latex pipe sealer never seen that kind of corrison Before very Interesting thanks for the Reply

Looked up the PINGEL Adaptor plate on EBAY, Keith, when you say you, "love your pingel," did you get an adaptor plate and a Pingel petcock as well ? Or is it just the adaptor plate so we can use a more common (cheaper) petcock ??
Any advice is greatly appreciated, I'd love to order something very soon and get going on her.
One more question, am I accurate in my quick measurements of 45 mm bolt hole center to center, or will 44mm specified items work ?
Cheers all !!

I just read a super old post on the forums about the 'pingel' and this link:
w.streetfighters-usa.com/pingel_power_flo.htm
I believe it's dead, is the 1702c the one that will work ?
thanks guys

for what it's worth, the part number on my stock pet cock: 442 09 50

Hi Mr. zedman,

I just wanted to greet you properly. Yes, you can use a manual Pingel petcock. Just block the vacuum port from the carb and you may need an adapter plate for proper fitment. However, if you forget to turn off the petcock you will fill the crankcase with gasoline. That is not a good thing. Since the petcock rebuild kits are not reliable an OEM or OEM-style part is usually best. Now here's your "mega-welcome". :)

My '79 GS1000 for some reason had the '80 style petcock that has no lever on it, it must be turned with a screw driver. I tried a different style petcock that was specified for a '79 and it didn't fit. Maybe my tank is off an '80, I don't know. Anyway, I replaced it with the same style from oldbikebarn, I want to say it was like $60 shipped.

As you said most likely an '80 tank and petcock.
