Petcock vacuum question

When I had my petcock vacuum line coming from carb #2 it wasn't getting a sufficient vacuum. The bike would starve from gas and die or I could set the petcock to prime and it would work fine.

When I move the vacuum line to carb #3 I don't have any problems regarding fuel delivery.

Is there a problem with what I'm doing? When searching this a little I saw everybody has it hooked up to carb #2.

Vacuum on #3?

Vacuum on #3?

Hi Mr. andrewclaycomb,

I didn't know there was a vacuum port on the #3 carb. I'll have to take a look at mine. Normally I'd say you had a faulty petcock if it works set to "Prime" but not set to "On". What bike are we talking about here? In the mean time, have a look.

First of all, what bike is it? :-s

If it has VM carbs (most pre-'79 bikes), the vacuum port is on #3.
If it has BS carbs (all '80 and newer, and some earlier bikes), the vacuum port is on #2.

Of course, it also depends on how you are numbering your carbs.
#1 is under your clutch hand, #4 is under your throttle hand. 8-[

.

I get the feeling that when it didn't work, the vacuum line was hooked up to a vent tee and not a vacuum port.

We're all in agreement

Mr. andrewclaycomb,

For the record, I officially concur with Mr. Steve and Mr. bwringer.

And knowing the year and model would help.

Thanks guys, you answered my question already. It's a 78 GS750E with VM carbs. I number from left to right, 1 to 4. And it sounds like it's hooked up right now. Thanks

BassCliff, is your 850 push-pull throttle? because mine isnt. did suzuki change that?

Andrew, I'm glad BassCliff's pix and suggestions helped you. I'm in the same predicament, saving for the fact my bike's an 82. I'm working outside, and the monsoons are over for the next 12 hours, so I'm gonna go home in about an hour and try to reroute my lines like his pix. I must have mixed mine up last summer when I was paintinhg flames on the bike. (of course now that my son is taking over the bike, I'll have to paint it again- possibly Kenyon purple for his college). Anyway, glad it's fixed.

Hijack! Sorry!

No push-pull for me Mr. catbed. I have only one throttle cable on my bike. I wonder if I can "upgrade" it?

Thanks Mr. PAULYBOY, but let's give credit where credit is due. Mr. Steve and Mr. bwringer hit the nail on the head. I was just agreeing with them. :-D

I'm glad Mr. andrewclaycomb got it fixed too.

Any engine vacuum port should work fine. Engine vacuum is engine vacuum.
I believe the vacuum port is on the #2 cylinder on most bikes, but it was on the #3 cylinder on my 79 750E.

The vacuum port will be on #3 carb.
