    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello,
While cleaning the carbs on my '81 450T i noticed the pilot jets are marked 22.5. My manual says stock was 17.5. I don't run pods and my exhaust is stock. Can anyone think why the PO may have done this? And will this increase fuel consumption?

It will increase fuel consumption.
Pull the spark plugs. Are they dark?
 
PO's often do this thinking more gas means higher horsepower gains.

It doesn't unless paired with equal amounts of air flow ie: pods, free flow exhaust, cams etc.

A step up in pilot jet size won't increase fuel consumption so much that it would be that noticeable.

You don't have pods but do you have a K&N air filter? How does the bike idle and run in the 1/8 - 1/4 throttle range? And as stated, are your plugs black and sooty or tan/brown? Does the bike bog just off idle or does it respond crisp and quick? Also check the turns on the pilot fuel/air screw. How many turns out?

If the bike is running good and the plugs are burning tan/brown, then leave it the way it is.

I suspect that it happens pretty often because someone uses a 'carb kit' that is either not the right one or one that contains parts for several different models.
 
I'd think it was to make the bike start better. Some of these old GS's were very lean on the pilot circuit & were hard to start without a lot of choke, the larger pilots make them start much easier. the fuel consumption will be so slight, you would never know, even if you stayed at a Holiday INN Express last night. If the mains were 2 sizes larger than stock, you may notice, lower mpg.

I've bought bikes, twice, that didn't have all of the right jets....and they didn't run worth a damn until I put in the correct ones.:cool:

I have a stock air filter.. The bike idles fine when cool but hangs when hot. It will come back down with just a light tap on the throttle or slowly sometimes on it's own.. It does respond crisp and quick. It is presently 1 1/2 turns on the screw and the plugs are the tan/brown color.
